O/T Traffic Diverted.................

At about 8:00 PM this evening, Interstate 80 between York and Lincoln, Nebraska was so overloaded with traffic some of the traffic was diverted off the Interstate onto parallel two lane highways.

That stretch is slated to become six lanes in several years. When the planning for six lanes first surfaced, I was quoted in print as saying they may as well go eight lanes right now, because they'll be doing it in ten years anyway.

Goose;

We lived along hiway 281 between, ah well about 1/2 mile north of the howard/hall co line. They upgraded 281 and made it 4 lane from GI to the dannebrog rd. They had the rough grading done and product and equipment in place to finish the hiwy to St.Paul. They pulled off that job and went somewhere else in NE to build roads. Howard co. didnt have enuf suck to get the job finished.

What will it cost now to put the 4 lane in.
We retired,sold out and moved to the south of NM not too far from the Rio grande.

Don"t know if its been fixed yet or not but south of GI on south locust to the interstate where there are bridges without any roads too. Can"t blame you steveormary for moving. I didnt much like living in the GI area much either. Much better suited a little further north and west.

You would have thought there was a Nebraska football game going on. I've seen that part of the interstate get busy like that on Saturdays in the fall. I remember once back when the speed limit was still down to 55 and there everyone was, bumper to bumper, going 75 mph. What was funny was that there were a couple of state troopers caught up right in the middle of it.....they didn't know what to do...I didn't see them stop anyone. They were just along for the ride, I guess.

My sister lives in Grand Island and seems content. 'Course she has a boyfriend by St.Paul.....

Is I-80 Congested like that a lot. I have to haul a load of boats from NY to Cal. in May and that looks like the prefered route on the map.

A couple years ago I made a hauling trip from Ohio to Colorado to pick up an old International truck. Overnighted at Laramie, Wyoming and ran I-80 to Kimball, Nebraska. At Kimball I picked up U.S. 30 and followed that to Grand Island. This part of the trip was the most interesting and relaxing part of the whole trip. Followed along the major east-west railroad with 5 to 7 sets of tracks and LOTS of trains. Stopped in the local towns and their little museums and of course stopped in Minden for the big museum there.
U.S. 30 is all 4 lane roed and 65 MPH speed limit and not a whole lot of truck traffic... Gene

It's congested because it IS the preferred east/west route.

It's a mess from Omaha to west of York. They're in the process of making it six lane from Omaha to Lincoln and you're in and out of construction. Sometimes the first 20 miles west of Lincoln is like downtown Omaha during rush hour--at 75-80 mph. West of Grand Island traffic thins out in a hurry.

Last time we drove from here to DC, we took I-80 east to Davenport, IA, then dropped down on 76 to I-70 and ran I-70 east through Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio. It was startling how much less traffic there was once you got off I-80.
