any computer gurus out there? my linksys wireless router at my house gave up the ghost and i had to buy a new one. so the guy at the store said i need this security one so somebody cant sneek on line and i got this d-link dir 628. did the install according to the disk on the first computer that is hard wired to the router. tried to install the software on my puter up stairs, not hard wired, but wireless, and it looks like i have to haul the system downstairs and hard wire it to the router to configure it? is that correct? what a pia.

Are you using the network setup wizard? If memory serves me the wizard will tell you to set up the first computer then download the settings to a disk/flashcard and then use sneaker mail to carry the disk to the remotes and upload the settings. You shouldn;t need to load the router software to the remotes as I recall.
Good luck, Sam

I think as long as you have it loaded on the computer thats hard wired you should be ok. I recently bought a belkin and just had to install the security stuff on the hard wired machine. The program configures the router. Then I just had to set the connection settings on the two laptops to match the ones I programmed in the security software on the hard wired machine. This basically means that you tell the wireless computers which type of security you have and then you just have to enter the password that you setup in the software on the hard wired computer.

Nope. When you set up the router it will ask for some security settings for your wireless. It will ask if you want WEP or some other level of encription. If you select WEP it will generate some keycodes that must be entered on the wireless computers network properties. Enable the security, get the codes and browse your wireless computers network connections. I should see your new Dlink but says it is a secured network. If you modify the properties of the wireless connection on the PC upstairs you should see a tab to put the access codes in.

D-Link's normally have an internal address of '192.168.0.1'. If you go to your wired PC - bring up Internet Explorer, and then enter that address (just those #'s (if that doesn't work, another common gateway address is 192.168.1.1)
), it should bring up a login prompt.

If you assigned a password to the router, put that in - otherwise, I think "admin" for userid and nothing for the password will get you in on Dlink routers.

From that control screen, you can set up all the wireless parameters - and then go upstairs and set up the wireless connection on the other PC.

Netgear routers are easy to setup. Hook everything up, then point your browser to http://routerlogin.com. It will take you to the internal setup wizard built into the Netgear brand. Follow the prompts. It will ask for security if you desire.
