Anyone have a Gehl skidsteer?

I am shopping for a skidsteer and tried out a new Gehl 4640. I really liked it but thought it was a bit more than I need. Has anyone used a Gehl 4240 (one size smaller) for handling wrapped silage bales? How did it do? My bales are about 4x5's and I currently handle them with a JD 5320 with a 541 loader.

I"ve had a 4625SX for ten years, 3800 hours. Very dependable machine.46 hp Kubota diesel. Only headache is priming it when run out of fuel. Difficult to access the hand pump. Lift capacity is rated at 1350 lbs. I have moved 1200 lb bales with it with the tine fork and grapple, but sure wouldn"t want to stack them.

Thats about the smallest skid steer I'd want to use on wrapped silage hay. Probably want counter weights on it too, all you can get, if the terrain is anything but smmoth.

Did you look at the NH? If I remember correctly the Gehl linkage pivots at the back so when the bucket is raised it comes closer to the cab, giving you less reach. I have an older NH but I love the vertical lift esp since skidsteers dont have much reach. As far as size, I would buy the biggest one you can afford. I borrowed my buddies skidsteer before I had mine. His lifted 1300 lbs. What a pain. THe thing was always tipping over when moving round bales. Then I would tear the twine and the bale would start to come unwrapped. Now I have one that lifts 2300 lbs. Its great. You have to remember that with round bales the load is further away from the cab so the machine cant lift as much as it is rated for. An 850 lb round bale was all my buddies 1300 lb lift loader wanted...
