O/T Roadside Produce Stands in Illinois

I was just told that Illinois has a law now that requires you to have a "Processer's License" if you sell watermelons cut in half or schucked sweet corn at a road side produce stand.

Have any of you folks heard of this yet?
It must of just came out within the last few months. There is up to a $10,000.00 fine if caught selling processed produce without a "Processers' License".

Sounds like another city bred regulation.... Does anyone understand what it means to be a farmer anymore?

If it gets passed, Illinois HB0687 will practically force all of us to sell our guns. In order to get a FOID card after January 1, 2010 you will need to prove a minimum of $1,000,000 in GUN LIABILITY insurance. Enough with the Illinois gun control laws already. DOUG

I put 4 or 5 small ears in a plastic bag for a buck.Customers that cant go 4 bucks for a dozen love the shucked corn.No mess in the kitchen plus my cattle get the husks that would be garbage to most folks. No cut or shuck law is an attack on small business.I alway give customers extra produce.Always add to the bag when weighing never take anything out.Regular customers get extra stuff every time.

If a customer wants shucked corn or sliced melon have them pay first then shuck or slice. Then you are processing THEIR produce as a favor. I realize it takes a bit of their time to do it that way.

Just another way for states to drag more money out of your (and your customers') pockets. "License" means "fee" which means employment for paper-pushing beauracrats to process the "licenses" and the "fees". I would like them to provide statistics on the number of people harmed each year by buying "cut watermelons" or "shucked corn" at a roadside stand. No harm, no foul, should be the rule. Plus, common sense stops at the doors of most State legislators as well as Congress.

I could write a book about value added product on the farm. They encourage you to do it then turn around and make you buy a license so they can hire some one to inspect you. I participated in at least four Farmers Markets every one had different inspections. Went under State inspection. Same book new chapter. You have to know the rules and then be just as nasty & mean as they are. I have went to the Sec of Ag and proved I was right. Got to know what you are doing. A lot of times it is someone throwing there weight around.
