Vintage 4WD

I hope the picture comes through.
My father in law hooked a Massey Harris 44 on the back of a John Deere G to make a 4 WD tractor to pull a big plow for the day. I never did see it work but he said it worked good. He could control the G hand clutch and throttle with an extension back to the Massey harris. Enjoy.

upon reflection, I am not sure if he sat on the Massey and controled the JD from there, I think he might of sat on the JD and controled the MH from there...

I have read about but not seen where a Wisconsin motor could be mounted on the front of a JD two banger and be belted to the belt pulley to give it a little extra gomez.

If it were me I'd rather be on the Massey. #1 you wouldn't have a good view of the plow from the JD and #2 if things got out of hand I'd rather be on the Massey rather than have it chasing me! Also, might add, Massey made a factory 4wd way back when, on steel wheels.

My grandfather used to do exactly the same thing, only with 2 Super M's, to plow the black gumbo in the Missouri river basin out in western Iowa. I don't have any pictures, but I'm sure he drove the front tractor and controlled the rear one with remote controls.
He quit all this foolishness when he bought a 706 gas, then later an 806 diesel.

These kinds of rigs had a degree of popularity in the 60's, but more powerful row-crop tractors were so much better!! Then the factory built four wheel drives really kuilled off the idea. Controlling one of these outfits must have been interesting at best. I recently saw one made of two unstyled JD A's. Quite an engineering job, but an R or even a strong D would have been a lot easier to use. Just my opinion.

We had a plow customer that put a V-4 Wisconsin on a 720 Deere. He graduated to a 5010 or 5020 Deere with An 8V 71 Detroit diesel

My dad told stories of breaking sod ground with his 770 oliver and vac case. He would attach a chain to the front of the oliver then to an old tire (to soften the jerking)then to a chain to the vac case. He said case kept the front end of the oliver down on the ground when plowing on hilly ground. He told the story of how it got interesting if he was out there by himself.
