I have a 1947 Farmall M and have been having trouble with the transmition locking up. You can have it out of gear, and you still have to have the cluch disingaged or it will kill th motor.
We have the hydrolic pump out and have had the top plate off but have not found anything.
If you disconect the nuckle from the clutch to the transmition and rock it back and forth it will brake loose and will be ok for a while.
Any information would be helpful.
thank you.

There is the potential one of the ball bearings has come out of its cage and is loose in the transmission. When you rock the tractor, it comes loose and you are free until it gets picked up again.

Is all of the oil drained out of the transmission? Could it be ice in the oil?

Clarkbug is on to it. The components that turn when the clutch is out in neutral are the front input shaft bearing, the intermediate (input to output shaft) bearing, the constant mesh gear on the input shaft, the costant mesh driven gear on the countershaft, the countershaft, and all the gears on it. The countershaft bearings, the Liftall drive shaft, and reverse idler.
I would put a wooden stick about 1/2"diameterX2'long to my ear (or an automotive stethescope) and touch the various internal parts to hear a bad bearing while turning it by hand. My guess is also a broken component getting into the gears. Draining the oil and using a magnet in the bottom will help. Also looking at every tooth on every gear. Best of luck, JimN

pull out the shifter, make sure all 3 slots line up(in the shifter hole). If they dont you have it in 2 gears at once, which will kill it dead. With it not running, take a tire tool, crowbar or big screw'em driver and line the slots up in the middle of the hole.
