Question on serial number

I have purchased a 1952 8N-C with a making on the serial number I cant find reference to. You can just barely tell the serial number starts with (diamond stamp) 8N, followed with 5I(one)2504 (ends with 2 diamond stamps). However, the "8N" has a smaller number 2 stamped over the 8, and what looks like an attempt to stamp a 2 over the N as well. Any idea as to what these "over stamps" of 8N mean in the serial number mean???

Is it 3 speed or four speed forward transmission? Is the distributor front or side mounted? Those are the major differences (besides the steering) between a 2N and an 8N.

The block has a raised "8N C" on the curved part of the block housing the starter, and has a side mount distributer, to my knowledge, only available on the later modle 8Ns. Also, you can see the 8N of the serial number, stamped with the same size letters as the remaining serial number, the "2" stamped over the "8" in the serial number is half the size of the original stamp.

My question to you would be, did they retro fit some late modle 8N engine blocks as 2N replacement motors???

I used to have an 8N. The side distributor was only in the last year.

The 8N engine will bolt into a 2N, but there wouldn't be a need to stamp a new SN on the engine or tractor.

Questions, I repeat: How many speeds in the transmissions? 2 and 9N had 3 forward, 8N had four. 8N also had a ball worm steering gear with the left and right steering arms on different shafts. On the 2N and 9N, the steering gear was a bevel gear segment with the steering arms bent coming out of opposite sides of the gear box in line. So which steering gear box? Transmission and steering plus rim details are good differentiators between the models.

Gerald - just saw your replies. Yes, it has the 4 forward tranny and the 8 bolt pattern closer to the center.

"The side distributor was only in the last year."

Actually, the side-mount distributor appeared at s.n. 263,844 in 1950, and continued in 1951 and 1952.
