Farm accidents

I thought there were some persons here proudly without rops or pto shields because they don't need them in the way. They don't want to pay for them. And they are too smart, too fast and too wise to ever get caught in a pto shaft or rollover.
Don't need them wussy safety glasses or hearing protection either.

Those of us who have spent a lifetime working around the farm all know, that by the Grace of God we are alive today. We have all made fatal mistakes,,,that fortunately did not cost us our lives. We are the lucky ones. Too bad when things like this happen. Safety has to be constantly foremost in our mind.
Deep regrets for those who paid the tragic price.
Harvey

A friend died here in NH last fall when his folding disc fell on him. The hose picked that moment to fail.

Had a hose blow on the loader last summer. Really makes you avoid putting anything important under the bucket after seeing how quickly and without warning the load comes down.

please, ROPS on older tractors is a joke. They were not built for them. Tell me how many incidents of row crop tractors have rolled. We can put so much safety crap on this equipment but there will still be some braindead buffoon who will hurt or kill himself.

A guy in rural Oceana county Michigan was killed recently while pulling out a truck stuck in a snow bank. Using a 9N, the bright fellow hooked the chain onto the top link of the 3 point and proceeded to pull, that is until the tractor rolled back and killed him, while his son and grandson stood and watched.

Your average Joe doesn't have any idea how dangerous farm work and farm equipment is. So far James and I have been blessed with nothing serious. We try to be very careful, but accidents are just that and they happen despite our best efforts to stay safe.

My sympathies to the family.

Harvey Brinker said it well. This pilgrim should not have survived until he was a teen. He has used up all his luck and borrowed from lots of others. Be careful, some of the luck I used may have been yours.

there are, the problem is not the tractors, the problem is the operator, several varieties led to problems, one is rich city dudes buying up "acreages" then deciding they need a tractor buying it and going to work without any idea of how to operate it or what its limits are, we seem to have produced several generations of kids with no idea of how to use their brains they expect everything done for them, if any old tractor is used as it was intended and operated by someone who knows how and like me, had decades of experience running machinery there usually isnt a problem unless they do something dumb, ive had a few "attention getters" but so far most of me is still here to tell the story, lol=]

An elderly farmer lived on a fairly flat farm, no steep hills or gullies. Always had several log chains hanging from the rear axle housing, i can remember seeing them on it.
Never did those chains give any problems.
Then, he sold the place to a developer, and bought a hill-side piece of ground. One day, while travelling across a slanted piece of ground, those swinging chains caught a wheel, and that was the end of him! Didn't have time to think!! Over it went! Daughter found him still clutching the steering wheel on his chest!

So you are saying the world and gene pool would be a better place. If all safety shields, covers, rops were removed from equipment?

Wow. I never looked at it that way but you make a very good point. I say remove the safety shields and let nature take it's course.

I say if you take safety equip. off to work on something get the damnnn things back on there if not for your safety but for other poeple. (kids) set an example hearing protection rops etc.

ROPS are fine on tractors originally equipped that way, but are you suggesting I should put ROPS on my antiques?

It was luck and the good lord's grace that my brothers and I were not all killed farming. We had many close calls. Farming is dangerous business no doubt about it.

They are MANDATORY here in Australia because of all the accidents happening with tractors flipping,, but they don't do that without help.

I will agree that some people don't need to operate eqpt under any circumstance, My son being one of them . but utill they make a PTO guard that will last longer . I will not spend my money on them . I just shut PTO off before getting off tractor, and make sure it has stoped befor approching it. No reason to get in hurry .

You know what? People should know enough to stand out of the way.

One thing I've observed over the years is that all efforts to idiotproof any system will simply be met with a better idiot. Meanwhile, the rest of us are suffering through and working around the idiotproofing.
Darwin's gonna get most of them someday. I don't see any need to stand in the way.
