How's the chicken business?

Any poultry farmers here? I've long thought I wouldn't mind having a few chicken houses. After some recent eye problems thats making my current job difficult to say the least it may be time to look harder (LOL no pun intended) at some houses.

Talked to a friend of mine this evening with 8 total houses, broilers, 4 new within the last 4 years, he says he's 35 days between sell and restock, couple years ago he couldn't get the houses ready again fast enough.

I'm still relatively young, dont mind work, dont mind being tied down, been around alot of chicken houses working on stuff for people but never actually worked the house but believe it's something I could do.

How's the market where you are? And what do you forsee in the future?

I have only a few chickens. Nothing like what you are talking about. But a friend of mine does that. Yet I don't know prices on them are the eggs. But I do know he said it is a 7 day a week job and if you need to go any where for a day or two. You must hire good help to take care of them.
He also said the eggs must be checked and kept at certain cold temps ect.
Hope any info I have given helps you. Good luck

I believe someone over on the Nebraska Cowman's forum claimed his chicken contract wasn't being renewed and he was "forced" to sell out. Indicates this might not be the time to start a similar enterprise.

With the price of feed now havent you heard about the big growers loosing their capital. Just what is the cost of the new chicken house and water and what do you do when you clean out the building between bunches better talk to an expert in cost management.

Broiler business went belly up years ago.Buildings were heated with oil at 16 cents per gallon. oil was 3.47 per gallon last Sep.Most broilers are raised in the south now.I bought split chicken breasts for 89 cents per lb last week.I would be very wary about going into large scale poultry now.Feed is 21 bucks per hundred in small lots here.

All depends on how the companies were managed prior to the corn price spike, during it, and how they keep the belt tightened even when cash flow increases. Poulty is my main income so we are are praying that the company we contract with continues do be managed smartly.

Well talk to your friend about it. No one ever predicts success in farming on here. Talk to your buddy and see if you think you can make it. I think that it would be great to see a few more guys take a chance and put some hard work into growing an operation.
