New Guy I am working on a Perkins 3A-152 engine. Need to know what the oil pressure is hot. Starts out at 60 then drops to around 30. Also is it normal for oil to blow out of dipstick when running. Unit has wrong dipstick so I am looking for the correct one. I have forty years working on gensets and engines. But this Perkins is new to me. Anything I should look for besides the normal items. Tractor has been setting for three years. So I am slowly working things back into shape. Thanks for any help.

Bill,Be sure to inspect that oil.I've seen tractors that had deisel fuel getting into the crankcase and diluting the oil blow it out at the dipstick before.

I've seen when a tractor crankcase breather tube gets clogged up or crimped they cause excessive back pressure at dipstick. I'd check that first and hope it is the cure.

What I would do is change the oil. If you want to have the oil analized get a sample as it is draining in something clean. Most oil companies will analize it to determine what it has in it. It doesn't cost much. If you have 30 psi I would not have a problem my self. I have a john deere 5020 that starts out at 30, then goes to almost 0. Now that gives me some concearn. As for the pressure starting out at 60, that may be normal. With the blow-by at the dip stick, sounds like you have a engine with a fair amount of hours, Check to see if the engine vent is plugged. I would just run it. Stan

Thanks to all. I have replaced the sludge that was in the engine, pulled the plate with the screen for oil pick up and cleaned it.Has fresh 30WT oil.Had injector pump and injectors rebuilt. Turns over fine and starts ok with very little smoke. Seems to run fine just never had an engine drop oil pressure that much before. Next project is to replace all guages and wiring. I am finding out that rebuilding old tractors cost as much as rebuilding old cars
