O.T. Epson 740 printer gone wild

OK guys, I know this isn't a new printer--just my old "reliable" machine still working up until recently. When I attempt to print (PDF file WORD file--doesn't matter) it will print out several pages of gibberish at the top--just 3 or 4 lines of random characters and this will go on for as much paper as I want to use up. Tried the usual stuff--self-test checks out OK so its not a hardware issue; tried a different cable, tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, etc...Printers are pretty cheap now so I'm considering throwing this one away but I've got a fairly large supply of color & B&W ink on hand..

If you've got the original installation disk, I'd go to Control Panel, Printer, and remove the Epson 740 printer icon- then shut down your computer, unplug the printer. Then re-install the printer with the disk. If that won't do it, I think you're sunk.

Hook it to some other computer and if garbage out, place it in the electronics recycling. Take your cartridges to a refill cartridge store, and trade them for ones that fit your new printer. They can accept unopened new material! (never seen them not do it) JimN

Be sure to disconnect the printer power cord and data cable. The gibberish comes from codes to a different printer that got sent to your printer.

As someone else suggested, while the printer is disconnected, uninstall it (remove hardware) on your computer.

Then shut down and restart your computer.

Then connect the printer and let Windows find and install it using the distribution disks. If you have Windows XP you shouldn't need any distribution disks.
