Ice storm photos - central New York

It was kind of dismal here yesterday. Didn't see the sun once and trees and power lines down all over. My solar panels have a pretty solid layer of ice on them.

Suns out today and it's kind of pretty. Just wish the power company's computer would stop calling my house to tell me how hard they are working on the power outage. National Grid called me six times so far - with a computerized message from "Rita."

I've seen posts on many forums about the dangers of backfeeding portable generators. I'd be more concerned about the many people trying to heat their homes with makeshift heaters while the power is out. First photo is our old out house. Glad we don't have to use it, it's a bit frozen at the moment.

Sounds like you did not miss any of the fun, darned thing has me whooped, too bright to catch up on any sleep, watching turkeys out my window scratching up food and catching some rays to warm up, about 40 of them.

Still have to get my iced up 850 ford running, cut a limb that is pushing on my electrical service, cut up more firewood from logs dragged into my yard, check out the damage on the property, can't wait to see how my tree stands are...., might have to get some more photos with the sun today, going to be a good sunset.

Most don't have power yet, this one really put a hurting on everyone across the board, little grocery store in Schenectady, went up in flames, 12 hours after they reported the downed line, not sure if anyone perished in that one, apparently it energized the aluminum siding and the place went up, they just don't have enough people to deal with these kind of weather events.

THANKS for shareing .. it lets us see first hand what your going thur.. Does your solar panel keep your furance going ??
GREAT PICTURES .... be careful out there

Thanks for the pictures.

Reminds me of growing up in NW Indiana. We had ice storms when I lived in the Tacoma,WA area and they were really distructibve. The one we had in '96 cut the power and phones off for a week as falling trees tore down the power lines together with the poles. My wife cooked on the wood stove and we gathered water from a seasonal spring to flush the toliets. All the stores and businesses closed because of a lack of electrical power.

We now live in NW Montana and due to the lack of trees in our valley, ice storms are not as menacing as they are in other places.

That looks cold to me, but good pictures. Benig from Calif I don't see the white stuff much. One time for my work, I went to Corning New York, in the winter. The air line lost my luggage. I about froze my fanny off in my calif clothes. Stay warm. Stan

we got pretty much the same here in nepa went hunting yesterday pm couldnt get through the woods trees buckling all around us there is literally an inch and a half of ice on the mountain i said the heck with hunting aint gonna see any deer in that anyway they are hunckered down somewhere got 2 deer in freezer anyway plus late archery comes in after x mas got 2 tags to fill then

Beautiful pictures! Im in Central NY too but all we got was snow southeast of Syracuse. Are you out towards Albany?

Nice pictures. We get a nasty storm like that once every few years. They do a number on the trees and power lines, but everything sparkles when the sun comes out.

We got hit here in Maine as well but luckily I didn't loose power although a lot of my neighbors did.

No where near the ice storm in '98 but still had an impact.

According to my math, the battery bank ought to be able to run our house for four days with no recharging (if the sun never came out). But, so far that is never happened so maybe I'll never find out. With this storm, we went about 30 hours on batteries and then sun came out. My 48 volt battery bank was reading about 44.4 volts when the sun came out they charged back up.

Right inbetween Albany and Binghamton about a mile from Interstate 88. Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown is 15 miles from me (so they say, I've never been there).

We dodged the bullet again here in Herkimer Co. I had to go to northern Madison Co. yesterday. The driving was OK until I got past Rome. From there, it kept getting worse.

jdemaris: Thanks for the great photos. While I'm sure most folks are not enjoying the effects of the ice storm, the ice does create some magnificant scenery. I've travelled across new York state from Buffalo to Boston on numerous ocasions. you've got some beautiful scenery without the ice.

I always alter my route a bit to see new scenery, however one item I've not seen yet, is the elevated sections of canal where Erie Canal crosses low lying valleys. Beautiful spot is upstate NY. You have a great variety of topography.
