I replaced my 1969 8HP wheel horse with a allis chalmers modle B farm tractor. I adapted a 54 inch ATV plow to the front of my Allis B and added and extra 1000 pounds weight to the back end of the tractor. I'm hoping this will push some snow.I want to plow driveways side walks and allies. My wheel horse had a snow thrower and broke alot. I Never plowed before. Will I need chains also? I help my neibors on my block there older and need the help.

For a blade that size I doubt you'll have any problems or will need chains. If you have lots of ice in your area, then possibly a set of road style chains, but certainly not the heavy duty lug chains found on farm tractors.

I suppose it depnds on where you are.

But I would think that anyplace you'd need to push snow, you'll need chains.

I have a JD 2640. I managed to get through last winter without chains, but just barely. There were a number of times I thought I was going to be kicking myself, but with a locking differntial I was able to get unstuck each time. I also have an Allis WD45 with a loader. It does not leave the building in the winter without chains.

If you have any neibors that are picky about thier driveways your not going to want to be anywhere near them with chains cause they will leave marks

We answered at the same time with two totally different answers. Bet that will clear it up for him. :>)

My thought is when you really need to push some snow, is the same day you need chains. And if you get stuck how much work is it going to be getting out.

But you are right if both tires are in contact with ice free pavement he should be fine.

Do you have a paved driveway, or gravel? IF it's paved and you go right down to clear pavement, it shouldn't be too bad without chains. I however would want them.

On gravel where most guys pack down the first couple inches of snow to prevent scrapping up too much gravel while plowing, you're gonna need chains. On ice, there's little to no traction without chains on the tires.

From what it sounds like, you're on pavement and it'll be getting cleared right down to nothing. For that, you should be ok pushing a small blade without chains. Don't count on it if you get an ice storm though.

Get Chains. I had two Allis model C tractors and without chains a two inch snowfall would mean they were stuck tite where they sat. one had fluid the other didnt. with chains on it was amazing how much snow they could move.

I used to use an 8n to plow snow, with the dearborn 6' wide blade. Without chains, I would barely be able to get up my drive way (somewhat steep though) with chains I could push 10" of light snow up the driveway. With chains and weight, I could push 2.5' of snow, pretty remarkable.

I think with the 1000lbs you will add, you will probaby be alright to stay on the driveway, but if you wind up plowing out the woodshed or something a little more challenging you might want them.

Look for used ones, I got my set then for $50 dollars, doesn't take much really.

Good luck

Definitely get chains. My Farmall M will push nearly as much snow with chains as my 4320 JD without, when on something slick.

I once drove the M to the other farm (3 miles) after an ice storm that laid down 3 inches of the slick stuff. All the cars were in the ditch but I just kept driving. Couldn't have done it without the chains.

I had a push blade on a Farmall B, which is in the same size range as your Allis. The blade was as wide as the rear wheels and it would push a lot for a tractor it's size. Never had chains on it but they would help. Jim

I had a CASE model C, with chains it would
plow anything, I put on a generator, for lights, and ran a belt drive hydraulic pump off
of 1 groove of a dual groove generator pully.
It worked great but you needed 3 hands for hand
clutch, steering, and hydraulic valve.
