electric fence.

Nephew has electric fencing withZareba Red Snapper Model cl150c 50 mile range 120 volt 60 hz. 3.5 va. Trouble is young 400 lb calf keeps getting out somehow. Rest of older cows and couple of horses stay in different fields but that one calf has become a regular houdini. Some times when we check the fence which is a 1/2 in wide tape imbedded with a wire like mesh the power is on at the start of the run but barely gives any snap at the end of the run. He has three strands on plastic posts and metal posts at about every 100 feet .Total length of fence is about three miles.Does anyone use electric fencing out there.

My dad and I never used tape, because wire (18 GA) lasted longer. The fencer he has will power 3 miles of wire. Had a bull once that touched it, after we had restrung a new area, and he fell to his knees before getting back up and doing a rodeo dance! We would set it about 30" and used just one wire.

Sounds like the tape is not doing the job. I would try at least one strand of wire.

I use one strand of 12 gauge hi tensile smooth wire and I have a small solar charger on a half mile to protect my wheel line and split a 40. Animals can either bull their way under between charges or jump over if the fence is too low and is only a sinle strand.

If I want to really keep them out I go to three strands of smooth wire at 42, 30, and 18 inches above the ground. Same charger and it puts out ~6KV on the fence.

The charger is too small. The Red snapper line never had much shock power.Zareba bought it and put their works in it.The same circuit board is used in 11 different models.Find a used Parmak SE3 a good charger.easy to repair at low cost.I dont care for the new models, they cost too much to repair.Tape gets breaks in the fine wires from swaying in the wind. This can leave the fence dead.I wont use it or sell it in my shop.

I never had much luck with the electric tape...wire would be ok for the cattle but I wouldn't use it for the horses- I've seen too much damge done when they don't see it and run through it while hauling a$$ around. I'm using electric "rope" now and it has been bombproof for me.
I use the Zareba solar chargers- a lot shorter fence runs than you though.

your fencer is good enough-- get rid of the tape and make sure you have 3 grounds we repair hundreds of fencers a year and the red snapper brand does a good job

I like using one strand of the tape so stuff can see the fence, especially with baby calves. Then use smooth wire above and below.

If the shock is weak then it is probably a ground issue. The ground rod needs to be deep and all connections tight.

I have seen my dad pour water around the ground rod in dry times.

Calves will do that I got one that test 5000 + volts and have a heifer that goes up to it and puts her head throughit and walks on she gets to take a ride when the others get sold

Get rid of the tape . the thin wire fractures too easily, put in some 2.6 mm wire, they won't go through it then , if they do then adapt one of those old ford coils to it, kick them into the next paddock.
