caught red handed

I was out in my grage tinkering at about 9:45 last night and heard a dual exhaust chevy pickup pull up and stop. When I looked out the grage window I saw a young man jog into and across part of my yard. I thought for sure this punk was gonna tip my garbage can over and run off. So, I walked over to the door and opened it up and to my surprise and theirs I saw one guy throw one of my mud tires that I had for sale into the bed of the pickup and the other one on his way with another. So, I casually walked up, got the plate #,looked both of them in the face and asked their names then went in to call the cops. All the while since they knew I'd caught them red handed they were chanting "how much ya want for these tires" yeah, I'm sure they thought I'd be out in the shop selling tires at almost ten at night and just figured they'd save time by loading them before we figured out a price. So anyways after I went in they put the tires back. I wasn't too worried about the tires at that point seeing as I had their plate #. Just thought someone might get a kick out of this one.

Too bad you didn't come out with lead a flying !

They are just going to go up to the next house.

a few years ago my buddy caught some guys trying to steal diesel out of one of his storage tanks, so he fire off four shots out over their heads (they were about 125 yards away and he was aiming really high). Anyway the 4 crooks called the shreiff and complained about my buddy shooting at them. When the whole story came out in front of the sheriff he turned to the boys and told them they shouldn't try stealing any more diesel from my buddy because when he shoots next time he may not miss his target.

I would still call the cops and if nothing else they might get a scare and a ticket for trespassing and or thief or the a temp there of. I know if it was me I would have called the cops and held them till the cops got there

I couldn't justify shooting in town, too many innocents around to get shot. If it was more serious, like they come in the house then I'd cap their a$$es. As far as going to the next house, I got the plate # and the cops are gonna talk to them and I will press charges if possible. If nothing else karma will catch up to them wink wink!

"They are just going to go up to the next house."

They were on a shopping spree, I'm sure your house was only the first stop.

I put out a microwave once. It was good, just a little out of date. I had a cardboard box strapped to it that said "free". A few days went by and no one got it. Then I put the box on backwards and wrote "$20". It was "stolen" the next day.

Looks like you missed a good opportunity to sell the tires at a real high price. Maybe rob them since you had the upper hand. TDF

Dad had a similar situation a number of years ago...he let the guys go, but had names and license number. Cops told him that, since the guys didn't have the items in their possession, and the cops didn't see an attempted theft take place, it was a "you said/they said" situation, and the cops couldn't take any action.

Around here, it seems like it's hard to get cops/prosecutors to file any theft charges. The usual charge is "exerting unauthorized control, which is a misdemeanor and is usually plea-bargained away to a suspended sentence.

Next time, after they get one in the truck, hold them at gunpoint and use a cell phone to call the cops...and tell the dispatch officer that you are the one with the gun, so the officer who arrives on the scene won't shoot YOU before asking questions. Otherwise, the perps will be back on the street before you are, not only stealing but looking for revenge on the SOB who called the cops...YOU!

I aint holding anybody at gunpoint out in the street in front of my house because I would just end up with assault charges. I did just as the police tell people, "Don't be too confrontational and get descriptions of the people, vehicle and plate #" I don't point a gun at anyone I don't fully intend to shoot and just can't for the life of me justify taking a life for tires. Oh yeah, as far as them being back on the streets, um yeah most criminals only spend a night in jail are arrained in the morning and are out on ror or bail right away. Unless they were severe repeat offenders they would just get probation for misdemeanor theft anyway. Buzzman I am sure you're just trying to help but your advice is not the best and chances are if I did things like that I would be the one ending up in jail!

Should have pulled the keys out of the ignition and told them you had a really good deal on a truck that had an extra set of mud tires in the bed.

I agree with that. I am curious why you didn't put the tires in the garage overnight. The way things are today, if something isn't locked up and chained down, it's going to disappear. I think unless it was someone breaking into your house and threatening your safety, pulling a gun on someone would get you in a lot more trouble than the thieves. Dave

The reason I didn't put them in the garage overnight is simple. It is also the reason I am selling them. SPACE I simply don't have the room for them in there. I can have things anywhere I want in my yard. I know that may bring on the thieves, bring em on!

One night at about ten or so there was a car revving up in my lane and when I finally got to the window to look the car was leaving and heading south. Went out to look and the woven wire fence along the lane was flat as a pancake but I didn't chase the car because the license plate was laying there. Called the sheriff, gave him the plate and the next morning a very sheepish young man came driving in. Seems he had a few too many the night before, got lost driving home and thought my lane was a road. When he realized it was a farm lane he tried turning around but the fence jumped out in front of him.

He told me the sheriff would drop charges if he replaced the fence, so I ended up with a brand new white board fence for free. The sheriff got a chuckle out of it.Jim

What if these thieves would have had a weapon of some sort. I think you did the right thing but leaving things out is an open invitation and is just asking for more trouble. I guess your tires weren't worth much if it's not worth keeping them out of site? Dave

Ummm.. I think I put in an earlier post that I don't have room for them anywhere else. That's why I am trying to sell them. They are worth more than the $150 I am trying to get.

this happened to a buddy of mine he went to his elderly neibors one night cause he got a call from them that some people were out in the field in front of thier ouse with a gun so he got his shotgun and goes walking out there well by the time he gets there gets about 200 feet from his truck up pulls a sheriff with his gun pointed at my bud he lays his gun down walks away and lays down. no charges are pressed agianst him though. point is if you use a gun on somebody outside of your house, YOU BECOME THE CRIMINAL!!!!

why not they are stealin your property. you paid for it. if more people would, you wouldnt have the problems we have in this country. had a pickup stolen here on the farm last year, if i had caught them in the process i sure as heck would have took a shoot at them. if you dont get them i bet they dont try it again

In some States you CAN SHOOT SOMEONE for Stealing Something from your if you catch them on your porperty. They don't have to come in your house. And I would drop a cap on someone if I cought them stealing something I worked Hard to get . WV happens to be one of them.

I know it would work if everyone could do that the only thing is you shoot one punk and you go to prison for life. Not worth spendin a bunch of years behind bars.

Yeah but what if they jump me then? Two against one, maybe I win and maybe I don't. If I don't then what about the two year old kid in the house all alone?
