I want to spray some autumn olive, an invasive shrub. I misplaced my mixing chart. I want to use 10 gallons of water. How much herbicide should I mix with it?

Thanks.

Larry,

Know what the percentage of active product in the container is. When we buy from farm store we get a 41% concentration of active product and we mix that at a mix ratio of 1/2 oz to one gal.

When we buy from the hardware store the active product is 11%. We mix that at a ratio of 2 oz to a gal.

If you really want to kill it, take a cordless drill, drill a 1/4" hole at the base of each major stem, about 3/4" deep. Dip a q-tip in pure 2,4-d, and insert into each hole by spring it'll be dead, and won't re-sprout!

Dave;

I've used that method to kill unwanted trees, like elm and box elder. Autumn olive has many sprouts where I think spraying might work better. Drill and fill would work fine on the bigger trunks.

Regular 2-4D will not kill it. I like the drilling into the trunk methods the others talk about

I use Crossbow brush killer. You can mix a little surfactant with it. Plus some Remedy and or Grazon.

Internet has the labels for all of these.

The best bet, for small ones. Chain saw it off flush with the ground and treat the stump with Tordon RTU (Ready to use), available at most farm and home stores.

I planted hundreds of Autum Oilive in the early 70's, at the direction of the Missouri Department of Conservation. Just another of their screw ups, like multi-flora rose and Serecia Lespedesa. At least they admit their mistakes and help you kill the crap.

Gene;

Yeah, not many conservation departments recommend it any more. I planted mine baqck in the 90s. It produces wildlife habitat quickly--but it spreads too agressively. I cut some back about six weeks ago and it's already 2-4-feet tall. I try to keep my border cut back. The ones I want to kill are invaders in the woods and an old field. I'll try both methods. Have some multi-flora rose too. Nasty stuff. At least your DNR helps. Michigan's doesn't do much for private landowners.
