The battery are my Super C was dead9(12 v system), so I put on my charger. (slow charge). I went out for about 2 hours came back, and I smelled smoke. I went to the tractor, the alternator was red hot, the positive and negative were red hot, the battery was not hot, the alt was smoking. What woulld cause this? There is a small vent on the back of the alt. it had some kind of white powder type stuff coming out. Please help.

Definite short in system trace it out by going from the positive post to where the burnt wires end.

PS I think you will need a new alternator.

Did you hook the polarity up backwards?

Bat might have died due to a short in the alternator.. and the charger for 2 hours just cooke dthe al a lil more..

No, the polarity was right. That is the first thing I checked. i am guessing the alt. just shorted out, because it keeps draining the battery.

if I can, I isolate a battery before charging it

some of the cheaper chargers have high AC ripple voltage that can cook diodes in the alternator, turns battery problem into 2 problems

now that you have let the magic smoke out, you can guess how good that alternator is

An alternator diode failed.
The diode allowed charging current to heat the diode pack (without cool air flow) and it burned the entire alternator. A new or rebuilt or junk yard alternator is needed. JimN
