IH B275 Diesel tractor eating glow plugs

My 61 B275 goes through glow plugs very quickly. I spend more on glow plugs than fuel. Can anyone explain to me the proper wiring for them and does it need a resistor in line to reduce the current. It is a 12 volt system with positive ground. If I glow for 10 seconds, risk of burning up another glow plug. At $35. each, it is really adding up. I have even burnt up 2 glow indicators. They are hooked up in series and if one plug blows, they all stop working.
Any feedback on this will be a blessing to me.

Thanks,
David

IIRC, the glow meter IS the series resistor.

Are you SURE all the insulating washers are in the proper places so ALL the GP's REALLY are in series?

What brand of GP's are you using? From the CIH dealer?

I have a later and very similar 424, and I am considering making adapters and using modern dual-coil GP's. A year or so ago, I saw somewhere on the 'net where someone had done that successfully.

Had a problem like that on my 6.2 diesel on my truck. Glowplugs were apparently 6v units run at 12 volts. Since the glow cycle was short, they weren't supposed to burn out. Engine had a controller that was supposed to take care of that. They failed regularly, and at $180 a copy that got old real quick. Apparently, the new glowplugs I got are redesigned and are actually 12v units. I have a switch in the cab, turn the glow plugs on - COUNT TO 10, turn off the glowplugs and fire it up.... Has worked fine for me! Might want to check and see if your plugs are 6V or 12V.

Ray, on these tractors the GP's are in SERIES, and only rated @ 2 or 3 Volts, IIRC.

Thanks for the reply Bob. I do agree and thought the same thing but when I asked the IH dealer, they assured me they were 12 volts.

thanks again,
David

Hi Bob, thanks for the feed back. The insulators are all there in their proper place. The GP are from Case/ IH with part# 710348R2. On the base of the plug has making of AN1000ME and the strange thing I see is (0.9V 7C). The spells .9 volts to me and with 4 plugs and a glow indicator , that may add up to 6 volts ,not 12 Volts which is why I am burning them up. The white box that the glow plug is in, has on it

Do you know if this is the right GP for this B275 0r do you have a part # that I can chase?
Do you have any info on the dual coil GP. Modern sounds good!

thanks for your time,
David

I have two b275s and have never burned up a glow plug. I have burned out the indicator because of a loose connection and letting it get wet, but never a plug. They are all tied in series, including the indicator, that makes them about two volts a piece but they draw a lot of amprage. Make sure all of your connections are tight and make sure none of the connecting wires are touching ground. Make sure the connecting wires are installed properly. disconnect the grounding wire from the first plug up by the water pump and make sure there is no other ground to the plugs. Is it always the same plug ? let me know what you find.

Thanks Mark
