JD 2950 difficult to shift

I have a MFWD 2950 with a synchro transmission. Whenever the tractor is running with the range shifter is in neutral it will always grind when I try to select a range. The only exceptions I have found is when already in one range and gear, I can stop and shift ranges without grinding (e.g. Low to Reverse is smooth). Shifting from Neutral to High range is the most problematic. It does not seem to matter if the gear selector is in neutral or gear when trying to select range.

Does anyone know if there's anything that can be adjusted to make it shift smoother or is this just something I just have to live with?

Some other tricks that I have found for reducing the grinding when coming out of Neutral range:

1) Idling the tractor way down first.
2) If shifting into High range, I first shift into Low range.

Any other tips?

Have you checked the clutch freeplay adjustment ?

If that doesn't help then you may have gummed up clutch facings makeing it stick/drag or it is just worn out ?

Thanks Mike. I will check out the free play adjustment.

It could be that the clutch is worn out. I've only had the tractor for a year and don't know the history of the clutch.

I was assuming that since it shifts cleanly between individual gears that it was not the clutch. Is this a false assumption? It's only the range shifting that causes problems. The clutch seems to work properly except for the shifting between ranges.

Probably due to the fact that you are using the unsynchronized shifter as neutral, leave the range lever in gear and the 4-speed in neutral for parking or stopping the tractor with engine running. I ran a 2955 w/cab and if I used the range lever for neutral and had some degree of grind if shifting quickly from neutral into range if I didn't hold the clutch in for a few seconds.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I run it now. The only problem is that there is an electrical safety that won't let me start the engine unless in neutral range. This same safety mechanism also blasts an alarm when setting the parking brake if not in the neutral range. The hard part is forcing myself to ignore this alarm when hopping of the tractor for a second.

It doesn't seem to matter how long I hold the clutch in, before leaving neutral range, it always seems to grind at least a little.

I also have a MFWD 2950, have run it for a few years now and have always had the same problem, except mine does it in range and gears.

I have found though if I ALWAYS go to a slot (range or gear) backwards (second or forth gear, reverse range) on the tractor before I shift into any slot forward (first or third gear, I or II range) it basically solves the problem completely. It took some getting used to and I have had to yell at my cousin multiple times but he finally got it and it works.

Also usually I must, and you can just tell by feel, put the gear into neutral to change range.

Hope this helps, it solved my problem with same thing
