is a ford 2n right for me

I am considering buying a Ford 2N. I comes with a loader, finishing mower and snowblower. The things I would use it for would be mowing with a 7ft sickle mower and 5ft brush hog. Baling with a Massey 12 square baler, blading the driveway. Lifting large square bales, digging and moving dirt, lifting car engines and car parts. I currently have a WD Allis narrow front with a loader and 3 point. It is in good working condition, but with no power steering and narrow front the loader is hard to use. Is the Ford big enough for my needs or am I better off with my Allis and putting a wide front on it?

From what i;ve heard you need something bigger. I dont know a thing about Ns, but from what i've heard on here you could find a less collectable tractor thats bigger and newer for less.

Your ford 2n is smaller than the WD you have. Fords like the 2n, 8n and 9n are over rated. Get a wide front d17, WD45, Allis with loader for a little more than you would spend on a 2n. A wide front for your WD would cost about 450 bucks at least and are hard to find. Just look for a wide front loader tractor in your area, preferably an AC.

Depends on who you ask and what your intended uses are............
Before purchasing something used go visit the various local dealers and look at the bare bones entry level tractors. You will be surprised to find they price out with warrenty, no previous abuse, no worn out parts, no corrosion, no obsolete parts, no "farmer fixes".
New costs very close to a used tractor then repairing/maintaining the used unit.
May as well have something with a modern 12V electrical system with an alternator, live pto, power steering, remote hydraulics, high volume/high pressure hydraulics, differential lock, a real drawbar, hydrostaic transmission, brakes that work, a rops/seat belt, M4WD, decent lights, diesel engine etc.

Well lets see. A WD is around 34HP and the 2N around 23. So no way will you be going up in the world but instead you would be going down. 2N will not begin to handle the baler and no way it will pick up much of a bale with that loader. Plus no power steering and a light tail end you would end up on your face or the tractor face in a heart beat. You WD is a lot bigger and has live PTO where as the 2N has nothing live on it. SO simple answer is NO. I know I own both of them plus 32 other tractors

just my 2 cents...

a 2n is for all practical purposes a nice antique that has limitations due to its time period when it was built. my advice is if you want a decent utility tractor trade in the allis and get yourself a nice utility JD, case or massey, if $$ is an issue, take a look at something like a massey 35 or 135, ih 485.. jd 1630, 1830, 2130.. etc. My main point being if you get an antique you will pay for that and it may not do what you want it to do down the road. if you get a decent utility tractor though it will keep its value and resale if you need to trade up or down again. paul

Thanks for all the input. I think I would be better off with my WD. I do have a wide front for it off another WD I have that has the clutch out of it and other problems. I have been looking for a little bit bigger and new tractor, but around my area everything is large scale farming and real big. I also like the fact my Allis fits in the garage and on my car trailer. I would like to find a power steering unit for the WD though, that would make using it easier. thanks again, Scott

It would compliment your AC. The loader would be good for some of the lifting jobs you mention and would be the only one good for a 3 point scoop. It will not handle a snow blower, put that blower on the AC. To small for the baler. You would find many jobs for the Ford but also keep your AC.

Buy the 2n, paint it and sell it to a yuppie owner of a "ranchette" for $5000.00. Then go buy a real tractor or get the accessories for the AC.

If you want to play you gotta pay. You can"t safely of effectively perform the intended work with substandard equipment. That"s one more reason why there are dead and crippled people.
You can"t make a silk purse out of a sow"s ear.
The new tractor will cost you but you will always be glad you bought it. In years to come if kept clean and if kept from getting smashed up. It will maintain it"s value for trade or sale.
People seem to find the more money than this for a couple of ATV"s or snowmobiles, a boat etc.
Here is Mother Deere"s largest econo hydrostatic. It will drag two Fords around like a childs toy in loose or muddy soil.

I understand the lack of power steering with a front-end loader, but what's the problem with a tricycle front end? Don't buy into the 'hand-wringers' who insist they're inherently more dangerous.

I've got a d17 series 4 with a wide front and PS i'd sell,also a ford 801 with a loader and PS.Located in ohio.
