My stepson is owned by the U.s. navy. He is now for at least a year in the inactive reverses tell he get out of high school. His father was in the marines but his dad, me was in the navy and this time next year he will be in boot camp.

Good for him, and I hope he make a career out of it and gets to retire at a young age of 38. There is no other job out there that gives you 30 days paid vacation starting on your first day. I have been with this company I am at now for 12 years and just now get 21 days paid vacation. I was in the Army, and still wish I was. Life was so easy in the military and there was lots of traveling opportunities. If he ever gets discourage, let him know its worse being a civilian. Have a good day.

Good Luck to him!!! Hope he takes advantage of all the goodies he'll get. Especially the education/tuition assistance. I see soldiers retiring with Masters Degrees that they earned while on active duty and didn't cost them much of anything except a few bucks and time.

Congrats...

Dave

Hey old, have you told him the other version of the motto?.....Navy, it"s not just a job, it"s a f---ing night mare"...LOL Sounds like he might be going in under a 6 year program something like I did. What I got was a year inactive reserve to complete high school, then 6 years active duty and another year inactive reserve when, and if I didn"t reenlist out at the end of the hitch. I spent the time between the USS Wm V Pratt DDG44 (two years) and the USS America CV66 (two years) and the remaining two divided between schools in Great Lakes and Norfolk/Little Creek VA and then about 4 months shore duty in Ingleside, TX. The Machinist Mate rate for us conventional guys was a dying rate from the start, something my recuiter didn"t tell me, since they were getting away from the boilers making the steam in favor of the Nuke"s and the gas turbines. Between that and the "politics" of everything, be it over color, or gender, I just couldn"t handle all the BS anymore so I got out when my hitch ended in "92. I think the new guys will have it a bit better now, in some respects, with internet access and phones to call home, etc. At the same time I also wonder if it will be better for the Navy as a whole when it comes to keeping their minds on their jobs and not on what"s happening back home, or if they are all the time able to "call home to mommy" when something goes wrong are they going to still come out of the experience as strong and self sufficient/confident as those of us that had to tough out the deployments and rely on snail mail and the occasional overseas call to keep in touch. It may all be nothing but I remember even in the 6 years I was in from "86 to "92 how much difference there was in the guys coming to the ships from boot camp when they just lightened up on some of the training regulations. I"m glad I didn"t stay in, I"m making alot more money and having more fun working for myself now than I ever would have staying with Uncle Sam. Still GOOD LUCK to your stepson, I hope he makes the most of his time in and comes out of it a better, stronger, more self sufficient man.

So you where on a floating city also. I was on the JFK for the last 3 years or so on my 6 years in. Hes going into a welding program which for the most part is shore based and is a part of the sea bees. Hes going in for 5 years active once hes out of high school. I was in from 1974 to 1980 joined because my draft card came up 1A which meant I was going in the service even if I didn't want to

I thought the draft ended in 73? I had to register ( dob jan 73 ), but I never got called. I thought it was enlistees only from 73 on.

Draft ended in late 1974 and they pull are people out on nam starting in 1974 but took till some time in 1975 to get them all out that is that they could get out

I was replying to spook,

these days they have enough people voluntarily joining that they don't have to actually draft. By the way my brother and best friend are owned by the Army and I myself am owned by another agency that I am not going to name. Too many people getting in trouble these days for what they post on the internet.

A few weeks ago my son joined Air Cadets which of course is commonly & humorsly known as the Space Cadets.
Besides some discipline. He"s able to pickup a free glider and private pilots ticket. Plus 1st aid, survival training etc.
If he joins the Armed Forces at the end of Cadets after High School. He keeps his rank. Not bad to step in a Warrant Officer or Chief Warrant Officer position at age 18.
I looked up the pay and was surprised to see rates in the 6000-7000+ per month in those ranks.
Of course the "free ride around the world" and pension at age 38 has it"s attraction. He could afford to "hobby farm" the home place and be the 5th generation. 126 years so far in the family.
Nearest I ever made it was Captain in the Fire Department for several years in a Nuke Plant.
