John Deere 320

I have a 320 that is mixing gas into the oil.The carb has been giving me a little bit of trouble keeping the tractor running, but when I take it for a spin it cuts off on me, but then I can start it back up and 3min later, it shuts back off. When it does that I can't get the gas out of the carb when I park it.Is the gas coming from the carb causing this or is this something major?

I am talking about a real tractor, not something these city people call tractors when they are lawn mower. This is a 1956 320.

Lots of farmers with 320"s to mow the lawn, work the garden, scrape out chicken barns etc. They were beefy litle machines and nothing to be ashamed of.
Either the float is set too high, taking on fuel and sinking or the needle/seat is getting worn and not sealing tight.

I was going to have the carb rebuilt, but I was just wanting to know before I sent it off to get it done. Thanks for your reply.

The carb was kind of the curse of the debuque built tractors.A lot of them run rich and will eventually foul a plug.If it runs good most of the time you probably just need a needle and seat and to check the float for leaks. If any gas gets into the float it will run to rich and foul plugs.I never had any luck with champion plus, the autolite 216 seem to work pretty good.

I was just thinking. The Dubuque carbs adjust in for rich and out for lean, opposite to most.
As previously stated. Hurling Champion plugs as far away as possible and installing Autolite 216 or 473"s will improve things.

A set of solid core wires and a new dist bushing won"t hurt either.
Which way is the coil and battery polarity? The battery + should be to chassis. The coil - goes to ignition and + to points.

That carb. is to have a built in drain to let gas drip on the ground if/when it floods over or is overchoked. A good cleaning and checking over of that carb. should fix it up.
