Price of straw

What's the local going price of straw in your area. Baling a small field tomorrow, part of it as a favor, and the rest to sale. I'm thinking about $2.50 a 40 pound bale myself. Anyway, what are you seeing straw going as $$wise. Just so you know, this is oat straw that has been combined that I am also cutting off with a sicklebar to get more yield. Those oats were chest high on me, and I am 6'6".

At Allan's prices it's $1 a bale. Last we bought was a few years ago for 1.75 a bale. With fuel prices your price seems about right. Figure out what it cost you then add a profit and sell it for that. Don't rip people off but don't lose money at it.

My crop consultant figured out the nutrient value at TODAY's fertilizer prices here, its nutrient value is worth 5 cents/lb left to rot in the field. So add on at least your fuel and labour on top of that if you're taking the nutrients off the field.

I'm not worried about nutrients as I have 400 tons of chicken litter to deal with, so removing straw isn't hurting me.

I am buying small quantities, 10 to 25 bales at a time, the price here in Michigan is $2.50 per bale, from the farmer. It is adverstised in the paper around 3 and in the feed store for 4. Usually wheat straw, sometimes oat straw. Don't see a lot of oats around here.

Last time a I bought small squares (for my garden) was two years ago. Both feed stores where selling them for $9/bale...same price for the 40# as the 70# at the other. There's virtually no small grain farming in New England, so it's all trucked in.

I've since found a source for slightly used but free straw that makes great mulch for me.

In Northern Ohio I was paying $4.25 a bale last year. Suspect it will be around $5 this year.

There were some small square bales at Runnings ( a general farm store)and i think they were asking $5 a bale. Neighbor had some large rounds last fall for 15 a bale. We grind our straw and mix it with ground hay, silage, and corn syrup, cows like it and do well on it.

Home Depot is asking $7.00 per bale and they're not very big. Hal
PS: Won't even reduce price on wet bales that were soaking wet.

Stop and figure out what you could sell chicken litter for and then say that. I have cash crop friends who are paying for chicken litter, then trucking it 6 hours, and still coming out ahead of buying fertilizer.
