JD 310 Backhoe running poorly

I have a JD 310 backhoe...Early 310 3 cyl. The machine has run great for 10+ years for me. Done a lot of work with and it has always run smoothly and never let me down. Started it up yesterday everything was normal. After about 5 minutes warmup it started sounding strange then stopped running at idle. Started it back up. Started right away but still sounding strange. Went to move some dirt and it did ok but was noticeably down on power. Got the job done and parked it. Yesterday I had just put 5 gal of fuel in it so I thought the fuel might be the problem. So before I started it today I drained the tank and put in fresh fuel. It started right up and I let it warm up. Could still notice the rough running. Did some work with it, noticed much less power than normal then it died and will not restart now. Insight from any of you experts would be greatly appreciated.

Is your inj. pump a CAV with a removable cover on top and a small line coming out of that cover ? There is a check valve inbetween the cover and that line , take it out and see if the ball is jammed with little particles, if so the plastic governer ring is crumbling , and your pump needs rebuilding

You've got your pumps confused. There is NO plastic governor ring in a CAV and there is no CAV used on a 310 Deere. It uses a Roosamaster/Stanadyne which does have the plastic ring unless it's been updated to the EID.

Guess I deserved this one. Called in a mechanic today. It was nothing more than a clogged fuel filter. And yes I did learn a good lesson here. Jeez..thought I just replaced that recently.

jd you could have done better than railing on the guy who tried to help but got some details mixed up. I read your responses regularly. You're good! Why didn't you just tell me to change the friggin filter?
