OK just go ahead and kick me in the behind. Grew up on John Deere tractors, farm with John Deere and sleep with John Deere all around. Needed another tractor around the farm mostly to pull our oversized manure spreader and some tillage work. I went and bought a Ford TW35 today. Wife says it doesn"t match anything we own. I just remind her it matches the checking balance. Does anyone have much of an opinion on these things. The only Ford on this farm in the past 40 years wasa 1922 Fordson. Is it possible to still go to heaven and own one of these?

After running Deere's, IH, CaseIH, and Ford's I still prefer the Deere for ease of operation and some of the little extras that come with them. Our TW the pins on the front axle aren't changeable so now that the pins are wore and not the bushings, the axle is trash or needs a lot of machine work. The non-sleeved engine shouldn't be a big deal, trying to get that much power out of a 401 makes it seem real doggy on the bottom end when your turbo isn't really working for ya. I hate the hydraulic couplers on our TW, those things constantly spit ends out just far enough to spray fluid everywhere and they are too far up under the cab to get a real good push on them if you use a quick hitch. The AC system is constantly crapping out. It doesn't have a big enough condenser in the front so if you run the AC on full for extended periods it will blow the evaporator in the cab. (The 6610 I ran for the county did the same thing) The radiator on our TW isn't big enough, once it gets a little build up in front of it the temp goes up fast. I don't know if you have the same big ugly dual hub but the way our TW is set you can't space it in or out any farther than where it is now. You can't use universal hubs on it because they didn't use a standard keyed axle. If you have a lot of 3pt equipment don't use it on that ford because once the lower cuff on the right side gets wore, which they all do, your draft control will go nuts.
Things I like about the Ford. It starts better in the cold, has a door on each side of the cab, has a gas pedal on the floor.

Maybe you realize the difference and end up ALL Blue in a few years time???You will burn about the same amount of fuel in pull to the max jobs, but when you try it in just chug along freely jobs, you will burn about half the fuel that green machine will take.Good choice lol,pd.

offcourse the TW-35 is a good tractor. it's a real puller ! I can shift without clutching with it. and offcourse there's the heavenly dualpower...

I'm sure you will like it.

Roel.

I have both Deere and Ford on my farm. Both makes have wet brakes and planetary final drives, which I like. Some people dislike the Ford engine because they are not sleeved, but I havent worn one out yet. I havent noticed any significant difference in fuel economy between my 4020s and my 7700. I think you'll like the tractor just fine.

WELL I DID THE SAME THING EXCEPT IT WAS A RED IH THAT I GOT. MY DAD HAS NEVER HAD ANY THING BUT DEERE'S BUT I FOUND A REAL NICE 986 WITH CAB AND NO TA SO I BOUGHT IT LAST MAY, WE HAVE A 4230, 4440,3010 THE 986 SEEMS TO HAVE A LITTLE WEAKER HYD THAN THE DEERE, IT DOES NOT HANDLE QUIT AS WELL AS THE 4230, BUT IT IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL START ON A COLD DAY. FOR THE MONEY I THINK IT IS ALRIGHT. ONE THING I DON'T LIKE IS THE TRANNY LINKAGE ON THE LEFT SIDE, AND IT DON'T SHIFT WORTH A CRAP.

Dunno about heaven.... but the tractor should be fine enough if it was looked after. The fact that there's a lot of them around, not for sale and getting their balls worked off every day ought to say something.
They'll also probably spend a bit less time at the fuel shed than the Deere too.....

How is that Deeres running 16-17 HP per hour per gallon are fuel hogs?

This is one area where I find the official tests to be about useless. Those numbers come from a full power pull on a dyno. In real world conditions where you may be running at less than full power or loafing along at less than rated speed, I've never seen that the Deere gives you much if any break on fuel consumption, The Ford will. At full power the Deere is probably better; especially the 50 series and beyond, until Ford introduced the Genesis engine. Deere only caught up to that a couple years ago.
At the end of the day the guy that's buying the fuel only cares about how many gallons went through the tank to get the job done, not what numbers the tractor could make on a dyno. I've got neighbours on each side of me who do a lot of their work with 40 series Deere's (3130's, 3140's and 4440), and they are bot forever complaining about how much fuel those things burn. They either have or have had Fords and David Brown's in the past that burnt less fuel, so I don't think it's their imaginations....

Got a neighbor who just sold his tw35, had it I think since new, was always a good tractor for him. He just bought a litter spreader that was a little to big for it and was wanting to go to a bigger nh3 bar. You see alot of Fords round here in that time frame, there just ain't alot of them for sale, the people who have them seem to never go broke, that should say some thing bout them.
Congrats, and good luck with it.
Dave

Congrats on your Ford tractor! Wish I could have that model. I have only farmed with Fords, I dont know why some people think John Deere is so much better, the only thing I see better about them is they cost more! I think a Ford will work just as good as a JD. Good luck.

We have always used Massey Ferguson tractors, but a lot of guys around here were hard-core John Deere fans until recently. Other makes are popping up because they are much less expensive for a tractor that is just as good. John Deere stuff is good, but not any better in most cases than the competition.

Friend just bought one a few years ago to pull his no-till planter. He unfortunately sucked pieces of a blown turbo through it in the first 5 hours of ownership but fresh TW engines are cheap, his was mil surplus from an armoured personnel carrier. He hasn't repainted the block yet so it looks a bit odd.
