A pidgon with a green leg band moved to my front porch last week. He has a green band on his right leg. He is light grey, almost white with black freckles. He is not afraid of humans and I was wondering if I should do anything. Any ideas on what the green leg band means?

The owner is pi$$ed that he lost His part of the money on the race. Just keep the bird it is lost! Big time racers on Long Island. Many bird clubs and some side wagers. Looks at the socal clubs missing bird board. After a couple of days rest it will go home.

A good ol' boy caught a pigeon years ago that had a leg band on it. He took the band off and it said "Wash., Biol, Surv." (Washington Biological Survey) with an address.

He sent a note to that address: "Dear Sir, I caught one of your birds. I did like you said to do. I washed it, I bioled it, and I surved it. It tasted terrible. You should not try to fool people like that."

definately a racing pigeon. my grandfather was an avid flyer. if the bird has a rubber band type band as well as a permanent aluminum band it was part of an organized race. if you catch the bird you can contact the american racing pigeon association with the band number and they will notify the owner. www.pigeon.org. they fly both young bird and old bird races, young bird are yearlings, old bird have already raced a season. birds are raced from 100 miles up to at least 500 miles from home. the rubber band is removed as soon as the bird returns to the loft, band is placed in a special clock that time stamps the exact time band is placed in the clock. a lot of money is spent on that sport. the birds are quite valuable if they fly good.

Glennster :

I'm glad you posted that info...I found a (dead)pigeon with bands on it's legs last year on one of my construction projects in New York City. Tried to find out the significance of them from the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation, but got brushed off by them. Looked up the site you provided this morning & found out the bird I found was owned by a guy in Arizona...Gonna call him later today & tell him his bird ended up in the middle of Manhattan.

The green leg band means the pigeon should be served with a white wine sauce glaze. ;-)

third party image

This little fella came to visit us a couple years ago, he was pretty smart and just looked at me as if to say "give me some food and water." We fed him for a day or so and he was on his way.

POSSIBLY it is a racing pigeon. All domesticated pigeons get a leg band and any of the varieties could be colored. If you can get a picture of it, I can tell you exactly what it is in 99% of the breeds. If you can catch the bird and get a complete number and year off the band (including the letters) I can possibly get an owner name. I have raised pigeons since I was a child and have raced and shown them all over the country. A lot incredibly nice people in this hobby....kinda like tractors.

Best bet for catching him is to start feeding him on the porch. Put some feed in a cage and try to trap him in it. Live traps will work also. It is most likely a racing pigeon but fancy and utility breeds are all banded also and can have colored bands. All of the plastic bands issued now are color coded to year. I am secretary of one of the national clubs. If you get a hold of the bird e-mail me and I will try to get owner info for you. Fairly easy with racing homers but not so reliable with other varieties.

Additional info: The National Pigeon Association has issued green plastic bands in all sizes for 2007. Most racing homers will be banded with bands from a racing club, not NPA, the most common is probably American Racing Pigeon Union (AU). The AU issued white bands for 2007 but has issued green in past years. FYI.

you can try and catch him with a landing net for fishing, if you do be careful of his flight feathers so they are not damaged. best way to hold him, keep his wings folded againgt his body, slide his feet between your index finger and second finger, the rest of your fingers will be under his body, hold the head facing toward your pinky finger, your thumb will wrap around the top of his body towards his rear. you can use your other hand to support him under the crop (stomach).

That is a racing pidgeon. If you know someone who races pidgeons they can track the owner with that tag It is its ID and is the equivalent to a cattle ear tag. It is also the band they put into their timing clocks to check the speed of the bird. My father in law races pidgeons and has recorded speeds of up to 2100 yards per minute which is around 70 mph!
