My brother is looking at a Long 910 at a local dealer. It allegedly has 90 HP, and would be quite a step up from the grey tractor I loaned him with 23 HP. However, It is a LONG.. and I dunno anything about em. Only problems are usual leaks, no power steering, and a bad left brake. I did a search but only came up with differing viewpoints on where they were made, and an address for a company in NC. It seems like real cheap horsepower fo rthe occasional time he needs a real tractor. ( Manure pumping, baling, Hogging, etc. He only has a 25 acre spread and we can't justify a 5000 dollar unit. Any opinions or suggestions?

If I were you I would pass. A Long tractor has to have a full time babysitter and mechanic. We have 2 of the 2610 Longs, both were bought new in 1991 they are supposed to be 72 pto hp. The tractors are and have been headaches ever since they were new. The Long frontend loader is probably the cheapest piece of crap I ever had and the tractors are also a piece of crap. It doesn't matter what price you pay for a Long it will never bring your money back or pay it's own way. I'll go along with the other guys, you'll be better off to buy and ole M or something that you can use more often than a damn Long.

So sorry to hear you have problems with your tractors. I know a fellow whose name is Fred bought a 445 long new back in the early 70's and has used and mostly abused it alot. It looked as if it was rolled down a hill end over end. Up until about 4 years ago (the last I talked to him) was still using it in his custom baleing operations and has done very little maintenace on it. But, I also know of fellows who have bought Long tractors to use in construction fields with loader and backhoe who weren't satisfied with the tractors either. What I am surprised, is your comments on the loader. If you ever get a chance, look closely at a bushog loader and noticed the similarities with Long. Someone did misinform you about the PTO HP, they are rated 64

I don't really know about the hp, they were bought for 72, but I went back to look in the papers of when they were bought new. The Long papers don't say, but the sales people wrote them up as 72 pto hp.
I thank you for your reply. Ours never were any good but I suppose there are exceptions to any rule, and I also suppose the dealer support you should get with new equipment could have been the problem. They possibly were not ever repaired right.
I don't know of any Bushhog loaders to compare to, but the problem I have always had is the welding breaking, the mounting bolts breaking, and the supports breaking. There has always been some part of it broken that should not break.
These tractors have never had a hard life, they were bought to bale hay and the loader to move hay and clean the barn. Neither has ever been used for construction or heavy regular work.
The one good thing I could say is that they always crank good, when thy charge the battery..

It seems that the Long 910 is basically a Zetor 8011, or at least has the same engine. If so, this engine was used in several of Zetors models.
8045, 8111,8211,10011, 10111, 12011. I thought this to be interesting.

Notice my user name as to where I live, the home state of the importer of this "jewel". Tell your brother that they need to pay him more than $2500 to take the tractor if he is required to keep it. These tractors are cheap for many reasons and if these reasons did not exist they would be a moderately priced tractor. Go buy a worn out domestic tractor and you will spend less time and money on it plus you can sell it should your needs change. Also you will not be the butt of the jokes concerning the leaks and lack of reliability of the imported junk.

How has Long stayed in the business for 45 years?
Is the poor quality the reason they are now selling Korean and Indian made tractors?

Well, the jury is definitely out on this one. To talk to the Long dealer, its a blankety blank deal and he should go buy it himself. That a reputable dealer ( Where it is on the lot) would throw the Long people off the property and never want another one, not even keeping it for their annual auction, is kinda a tip off for me. I've heard it is a Zetor.... say no more. I think we will invite the area Long dealer to go buy it wholesale from the Case dealer . Re the suggestion to get a 8N, we got a 2N already, and need 4 times the power to run a manure pump to clean out the lagoon. A neighbor has a d-14 AC for 3300 with a so so restoration job.. ?????
Still not enough HP.

I agree with ltf, 1030 or 1070. Saw a 930 and a M at a sale, guess which one brought more ? And they both ran good.

Search around and see if you can find an old Case 1070 or 1370 cheap. These tractors have little resale yet they can deliver the horsepower you require. They seem to be the stepchild in the market place but will surprise you with their dependability and ease of maintenance. They are too big for the person with a few acres and they are too old and lack the conveniences a fulltime large scale producer desires. I have seen these tractors sell for as low as $2700 w/o cab and poor rubber

Don't know about the hp, there's a local Long dealer here who sells lots of tractors, and I've heard good things about most of them. Seems to me that 90 hp is a lot for 25 acres. I think Lyle is right, for $2500 or slightly more you could get a tractor with a known history (8N, IH, A-C, etc.). My 2 cents.

My cuz has a smaller model Long,601 I think. We have been ribbing him for three years now about it. He is always working on it, never runs right, if it runs at all. Right axle has broken loose on him 3 times. Two weeks ago he said, "I think you are right, it's a piece of junk". Now someone else may say they have had good luck w/theirs and maybe so, I would rather take my chances with a good Farmall, A-C or Oliver, I know parts for these can be found easy. You can still get a bunch of poney power for 2500 bucks. My 1/2 cent worth.
