Hi my name is matt, I am new to this site. I just started to get interested in antique tractors about 2 years ago thanks to my good friend Matt Stevenson many of you probably know of him. But anywho, I just purchased my first tractor, a 1944 john deere A. The tractor is restored, and does run. But it has no throttle response. well it does but not what i think it should have. many people told me it may be the carb, but i can put it all the way full throttle and push against the governor and it will hit like a john deere 2 cylinder is suppose to. if it is at idle and i jam the throttle it will hit but not like it should. but if i leave it at full throttle it will eventually gain on the rpms. compared to my friend matts unstyled B i just think it isnt running right, because his has quick throttle response and will hit hard like its suppose to all the way to the max rpm. Thanks for the help.

Another thing to look at is the 'speed change spring' JD part no. B273R. This is the spring steel bar that the rod from the governor to the carb connects to at the governor. The one that was on my 44' A was weak and throttle response was sluggish especially pulling a dump body full of stone. Our Deere dealer had one in stock. 15 minutes to change it, and it was a whole different (better) tractor.

Correction I mis-spoke this spring is on the governor bar and connects the operator's throttle rod to the governor.

Matt, Im unsure if this is the ONLY problem but heres how you adjust the length of the rod from the governor down to the carbs top throttle.

Remove rod n set the hand throttle WIDE OPEN

Hold the carbs top throttle to WIDE OPEN

Adjust the rod length so its about 1/2 hole SHORT of just dropping down in.

Insure theres nuttin binding up free action like a cotter key somewhere.

Don"t know a lot about JDs but the governor seems to be your problem as you say it does get to max rpm but slowly.
Try the carburetor without any governor connection, as the governor is the speed control, and see if manually opening and closing the throttle plate gives sensible rpm change (don"t overspeed the engine). If the engine speed is easily contolled that way, check for sticking in the connection from the governor. It may be trouble in the governor, or adjustment of how quickly the governor reacts to changes in the engine speed, or how far the governor actually opens the throtle plate.
Hope this helps to isolate the problem.
Regards, RAB

If the throttle to governor rod is binding it will not allow the governor to work as it should. I have found the end of the rod bent just a little, just enough so it binds in the flat spring and will not move smoothly.

Oh, yeah, that rod is adjustable too. The JD guys will have to give you the correct setting. I think it's like half a hole long but I can't remember if that's closed or open.
