I have a 4010 Diesel, works good. Got it with duals etc 3 years ago for quite a bit less than you mentioned. I did not get a loader but would give more for the diesel than a loader. Seen a 4020 with nice rubber, duals and cab with rebuld reciepts go for 7200. at auction last week end. Unless your going to run it mainly in cold weather I would hold out for diesel. My thoughts, Bob

I don't have any experience with big gas tractors- how thirsty is the gas rig, compared to a diesel of the same size?

I don't know where you are, but around here that is about twice what a 4010 gas is worth, no matter how good it is. You should get a good 4020 diesel for that kind of money. 4010's are about 80 HP. When you get a rebuild kit, I think all you can get are 4020 kits. The sleeves and pistons interchange. So, there wouldn't be a reason to get the smaller bore. I would guess that 4020 pistons would add about 10 HP.

9K seems a bit excessive for a gasser 4010. That tractor here in southern WI would be more along the line of 4-7K, the high end getting you a nice diesel. I"ve never been around one and wonder if it wouldn"t be a bit of a fuel hog. They were built between 1960 and 1963 and put out about 85HP. If it"s been updated to 4020 specs, it"ll be putting out about 95HP

The 4010 Diesel is a very good tractor. I put many hours on one and many more on a 4020.

Nice paint jobs sometimes hide bigger problems than cosmetics.

I wouldn't attach "nice" to any cab on a 10/20 series tractor. They are aftermarket Hiniker or Year-A-Round brand cabs that are mounted directly to the frame. This makes them loud - everything rattling from the vibration and the engine noise funneling right back to you. They're also almost unbearably hot in the summer. Depends on the hours you plan on being in this beast. You could take the doors and glass out in the summer and have a 4 post canopy.

The loader increases the price a bit if it's in good condition. Is the tractor a wide front(better be at the asking price)? If so, at that price it better be a Deere, not a Norden or Shwartz. They tend to bust even without the stress of a loader on front.

You haven't said where you're from. Here, that tractor alone is worth 4-5K. I don't know what loaders bring... 1500 maybe??? Personally I'd hold out for a diesel but, if you're not gonna put a lot of hours on it or work it hard, gas might be fine.

Remember there are a lot of tractors out there and many of them for sale. Don't even go look at it if you're not willing to walk away.
