Here's one for the Continental 4 Cyl. pros.

I have an F163 engine in a 1970 model Ditch Witch. I had the "experts" at the D/W dealer tune it up for me & ever since it hasn't been right to the point that I gave up on them!

The present situation:
-Carb (Zenith)rebuilt 3 times & adjusted to spec.
-fuel & filters are clean
-plugs new & gapped properly
-timing is set according to manual
-distributor cap, rotor, points & wires all new

Engine will start, usually with starting fluid & will idle OK although it stumbles every 20 seconds or so. When I try to throttle up the engine stumbles even more, backfires once or twice & then often kills.

Not sure what I'm missing here but obviously it's something good.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

When you solve the problem, tell us what you found. I just had a continental engine "tuned up" at a shop and when it returned it was running poorly. Turned out they used the correct firing order but assumed the distributor turned clockwise when in fact it turned counter-clockwise. Once that was fixed, it ran like a top.
Good luck

Is there a rubber fuel hose between tank,
fuel pump and carb. If so rubber might have
come apart on the inside or there could be cracks in the hose. Had one run me crazy once
and the hose had broken down inside creating
a plug that closed and opened.

you could have a vacuum leak at the manifold or the bottom of the carb.

Check the valve lash ??? Mechinical governor or vacuum? sometimes the vac. governor will chock it down

DaveH, This engine has the mechanical governor, which I really don't know much about!

I haven't checked the valves yet. How much difference would valve lash likely make since it will idle fairly well?

Thanks gentleman,

The fuel tank & filters are clean as that was one of the 1st that I suspected but I hadn't considered the fuel tank cap!! I'm gonna clean that & give it a try.

Thanks again to all.

I agree with the others on it just plain isn't getting enough gas. Does it have a fuel pump or is it gravity feed?? If it it gravity feed the carb should have a drain plug, remove the drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas. If it has a fuel pump remove the fuel line at the carb and use a small test tank held up higher then the carb and see how it runs that way. If it runs good that way you may have a bad fuel pump. Either way you have a clogged fuel sytem or one that isn't working as it should.

Rusty and Bus Driver have got it!!

I had a pickup do the same thing - step on the gas and it would quit... clogged fuel filter!

She's starving for fuel, either the carburetor is still not right, or you have a fuel delivery problem. Does it have a sediment bowl? Does it need cleaned? Is there crud or rust in the fuel tank that is restricting the fuel flow? How about the fuel tank cap? If it is a vented cap, and the vent holes are plugged, you will get those symptoms.

After it dies determine if you still have a good blue spark ? good fuel flow ? clean fuel tank? clear unrestricted air flow ? What type of ignition? Battery/points type or electronic or Magneto? Check the switch or kill switch and wiring. Run non resistor plugs and metallic core wires if a magneto ignition. Are the plugs fouled, oily or wet with fuel? What is compression like?
