JD 318 trans fluid

Could anybody tell me the type of trans. fluid used in the JD 318 I was told some time back to use type F auto fluid but not sure if that is right
I don't have a owners manual

I'd just but in IH HyTran - it was designed for hydrostatic transmissions.

Book says Type F (and nothing else will work) Do Not Use Mercon I-II-III-IV or any thing but F.

Note!!! Use only John Deere Low Viscosity Hydrostaic Oil only, unless you what to replace the hydrostat and gears in the transmission,If you had the old red oil in it you will have to adjust the neutrail.

they and other johndeere equipt that was hydrostst till the 9ooo series combine usesed jd hydrostat fluid but deere has stopped selling that prouct so now they say type f atf fluid i have been able to still buy it at the local napa auto parts to use in my old farm equip so yes tpe f atf is what you need in a 318 lawn tractor LJL

My 317 book says "F" also. Means Ford I think. But did'nt they change to some other code. Ford I mean. I don't see why you could'nt just use hydrolic oil like in the big ones . Noticed a leak in one of my disconnects and was thinking what to buy if I needed to add. Oh well something to yak about Yellowdog.

As strange as it may sound, type F ATF is what was specified for those tractors.
