What is the proper color of a 1935 Farmall F12 tractor? Should it be red or gray? HELP!

November 1 1936 was the "official" date of changeover from gray to red, coinciding with the first day of the 1936 model year. I think crawlers were red earlier than that though.

There is a lot of anecdotal evidence, primarily from old-timers who swear they saw them, that IH delivered plenty of red tractors long before November '36.

I'm with Fawteen below on this one though. It's your tractor, paint it the color you like best. Any busybody who tells you its wrong has no way to prove it.

I just got done with a nut and bolt restoration of A 1936 FARMALL F12 IN THE MID SIXTY THOUSAND SERIAL NUMBER RANGE and even though I've lost sleep over it, myself and the restorer who consulted other people as did I can tell you there was no gray on it only red. Furthermore It was bought from the original family who also said it has always been red. I've lost sleep over this and have come to the conclusion that there is no conclusion. Paint Commite decision 100 states as of nov 1 1936 All (notice the word all) tractors will be painted red not we will start painting tractors red as of nov 1936. To add to this nobody can really say when a particular serial number was used even though it was issued in 1936 and even if they all got used. I think the word all in the decision indicates the use of red for tractors before that date and it was a way to make it official. Also if you paint your tractor gray please use a varnish that turns dull in a month to be accurate. I think it is safe to assume that somewhere in 35 36 they used red paint on tractors maybe not all but some. This message is starting to sound harsh, but my point is that nobody knows for sure, especially when there are accounts of red tractors earlier. Kinda like the sucker, the world will never know. shawn

The information I have is that the switch was made in November of '36. Your tractor should be gray.

That sounded a bit too "Correct Police" for me. Originally, it would have been gray, but a lot were re-painted red to "keep up with the Joneses". So, if you like red better, red would be perfectly appropriate as well.

Fer that matter, teal with pink wheels is okay if that's what you like.

I could be wrong, but I think the switch to red was in 1936. Might want to check the farmall board about that.
