We were recommended against the Versatile 555 tractor because of the cummins v8 (555) used to power it. What is the problem with this motor? Is there a problem with this tractor model in general? Can the original motor be replaced with another companies engine, if it fails? If I tie into this tractor, am I looking at a mess or a good thing? I have heard only good things about Versatile, but..... ..... .. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

We had a Corn binder truck with the 555 cummins in it.Owned by a large contractor hr in Oregon. If it wasnt swallowing Valves it was blubbering oil out the stack. It was under a service bed ( Grease Truck)Which was a blessing as the mechanics were always close by and they had plenty of oil to add. I'd run fast the other way or have another engine for it. John

been around a lot of 555s used in loaders. was not the worst engine ever built nor the best. They seen to have some issues the valve train, seen a few of them drop a valve.

My brother in SE MT has a tripple-nickle Versatile and hasn't had any real bad problems. I think mainly just leaks ansd U-joints. He mainly works the lighter stuff with it. He has a Versatile 700 NA 855 for his heavy work.

The 555 is set up to run somthing like 2600 or 2800 high idle. They don't have a good track record at this speed. Be sure to keep the coolant filter/DCA aditive up to spec to prevent liner pitting.

Parts are MUCH higher than for the old standby 855 cubic inch in-line 6. A rebuild with recon heads, and liner and piston assemlies will probably run 3 to 5 times the cost of the old in-line six.

That being said, some of them did last quite a while, if not lugged, and operated at a reduced speed.

The problem in the Versatile with running them at a reduced speed, or replacing them with a motor turning 1800 to 2100 RPM's is that your field speeds will be screwed up, and if I remember correctly, at the high speed, your road gear is only about 12 MPH, so if you operate with the engine slowed down by nearly a third, you don't have much of a road gear.

Some of the Cummins dealers in our area repowered them with the B or C series in-line sixes, set to turn about as fast as the V-8, but that ain't a cheap fix either!

Years ago when we were looking for another truck the salesmen (a good friend of mine) told us to stay away from anything that had the 555 Cummins engine in it. I don't know any of the problems this engine had and don't know of anyone around here who has ever had one. Sorry I could be of more help.
