The 555 is set up to run somthing like 2600 or 2800 high idle. They don't have a good track record at this speed. Be sure to keep the coolant filter/DCA aditive up to spec to prevent liner pitting. Parts are MUCH higher than for the old standby 855 cubic inch in-line 6. A rebuild with recon heads, and liner and piston assemlies will probably run 3 to 5 times the cost of the old in-line six. That being said, some of them did last quite a while, if not lugged, and operated at a reduced speed. The problem in the Versatile with running them at a reduced speed, or replacing them with a motor turning 1800 to 2100 RPM's is that your field speeds will be screwed up, and if I remember correctly, at the high speed, your road gear is only about 12 MPH, so if you operate with the engine slowed down by nearly a third, you don't have much of a road gear. Some of the Cummins dealers in our area repowered them with the B or C series in-line sixes, set to turn about as fast as the V-8, but that ain't a cheap fix either!
