If you are going to use the tractor on the road it must be registered so most are registered and given number plates when new, these last the whole of the tractor's life and are transferred from owner to owner along with the paperwork. The tractor also has to have a road licence paid every year and insurance. The police or government officials can put that number into their computers an see whether it has been taxed and insured for the year in question.

If you have a pre 1970 tractor, car, van or lorry they are classed as Historic Vehicles and do not require paid licence fee but you still have to notify the government every year and it must be insured.

If you never go onto public roads, you do not need any documentation.
