interesting phenomenon

I had a noisy wheel once at fleet farm on a cart. I went to the WD 40 isle and gave it a squirt when no one was looking. Another time I was looking for one of those bigger flatbed carts and none were to be found. I went out to the parking lot and brought all 5 back in to the store. The manager lady saw me just shook her head. ( They all know me there, as I am a regular and often help people find things ) It could be my retirement gig. LOL Bill

Hmmm, so that's why ours has nothing but junk carts? RK is spending all the Capitol improvement money at your store. LOL

I was in ours last week and the cashier said we haven't seen you for a while,,,,, it had only been 3 days. Guess I'm in there too much?

There are signs now at our grocery store parking lot stating: WHEELS WILL LOCK UP BEYOND THIS POINT.
Smart carts? I wonder how much that cost?

I have seen a 53' trailer and tractor in various large grocery store parking lots from time to time. One time the trailer doors were open and there was activity inside so I snooped closer and found a pretty complete mobile shop inside where two or three guys were overhauling the shopping carts. As needed they got things welded, new casters/bearings, alignment, new plastic handle covers etc. Looked like a pretty godd business to me.

Do not know if they are now more high tech, but I saw one store maybe ten years ago with some same perimeter limiting gizmo.

So I looked them up. The ones I saw merely had a bent steel bar above one wheel. When you went off premises the bar would drop down and jam the wheel.
That type is this, I am thinking.......

Electronic and magnetic systems are commonly used for this purpose. These security systems make use of an electronic wheel clamp (or boot) attached to the wheel of the cart. The parking lot of your retail store is then fitted with a thin wire, which locks the wheel clamp when a cart passes over it.

It's a good feeling to get a cart that works. Somewhat related, the local supermarket recently had renovations done. When the store reopened, the floor around the quick checkout was no longer level. If you don't hold onto your cart it'll roll all the way to the exit.

Ellis that is the laugh of the day !! I can relate. My bride and I got a big kick out of that one!!! Thanks!

Why not simplify the wheel problem and make them square-shaped instead of round? Problem solved, no need for electronic gadgetry !!! Sometimes there's a solution that is so simple some might think it stupid !!!

one grocery had a sloping parking lot & carts frequently got away & went rampaging down the slope. Once I saw a cart freewheeling downhill & it hit the side f a parked car. The cart hit & jumped straight up 3 feet, came down & hit the car again.
