Speaking of Cart Keys

Back in 1958 when I was about 17, a girl in my class drove a '56 Buick that belonged to her Dad.
One day, a guy who owned a nice '57 Buick was hanging around and Arlene asked if she could take his car for a ride. He said sure but did not give her the key.
She put her Dad's car key in the ignition and drove right off.
We were all taken by surprise but mostly the owner of the '57 because he was very particular about his nice Buick and didn't let anybody drive it.

A friend that stores his restored 55 IH truck here lost his keys last year and was looking everywhere.
I tried my golf cart key in it and he is still using it when he is here.
I had a spare.

I had a 74 Plymouth Duster in high school.
My friend down the street had the same.
The ignition keys would interchange, but
not the trunk keys. I often wondered how
many different locks the manufactures put
on cars.

Ford use to be notorious for this, haft the cuts were for the door and haft for the ignition. Some would unlock the door but not operate the ignition switch. Some would not open the door but unlock the ignition switch.

I have seen a few Chrysler keys interchange.

My ignition key for my personal car fit the door on my school's driver ed car. both Chevrolets, different years.

Another time, my door key fit another identical Chevy SUV in a parking lot. I had mistakenly tried it, realized not mine soon's I got the door open.

I used to hang out at a friend's used car lot. He also ran a wrecker service, he had a coffee can full of keys, he could open a lot of cars, easy lockout service. joe

I think one of the Peterbilt dealers told me there were only about 50 lock sets for them to do the whole manufacture of trucks. this was about 24 years ago now. Reason for know ing this was I wanted my new truck to be keyed the same as the older one so I could use one key for both trucks. Made things simple for me.

My 656 key will fit a new Case IH tractor cab and
switch, most of my JD mowers and a lot of Farmmalls
with factory key switches.
