Adopted my First Cub

Made a deal on this back in July, finally picked it up Saturday. Need a carb rebuild kit, not sure what carburetor I have. If you can identify, please share. Want to order a kit through YT.

I won't give exact numbers, but adoption fee was a little north of $499 and a bit south of $501. So you have a range. I'm happy with it so far. Non-running tractor been parked at least ten years under cover. Owner bought a zero turn because the little Cub was too slow for mowing his acreage. Still 6 volt system.

Thanks for any help on the carburetor question and anything else you can think of for this tractor.

That carburettor needs a rebuild because beating on the float bowl with a wrench obviously didnt work!

If you take the carb apart and know that EVERY passage is clean, set the float somewhere near right, it may work without a kit.

Order a kit for an IH carb,if you really
need one. 99 percent of the time my wife
just does a really good cleaning on cub
carbs, she rarely uses a rebuild kit.

The IH logo is a dead giveaway that it's the IH carb. There is only one IH carb.

Appears your idle pickup tube is broken. There is a small brass tube that screws into the top half and inserts into the bottom half. Fairly delicate, and you can snap it off if you don't pull the carb halves straight apart. It'll run okay without it, but better with it.

Good morning: I have an early 1958 Cub LO-BOY, with the IH carb. I looked at U_Tube and found a repair/rebuild video. My carb had a warped casting, similar to the unit in the video. I did my best to level the warped casting, but the carb will overflow if I let the tractor sit for 30 minutes with the tank valve open and the engine not running. Good luck with your unit. Carb kits are available, but the main body castings, possibly not.

I may try that first. At least wanted to get some good gaskets on it. Thanks,

Thanks, that's the direction I was leaning. Thought it would be good to have the gaskets at the very least and I think they only come with a kit.

(quoted from post at 07:21:25 08/07/23) Be sure to prime your oil pump before you try to start it.

Can I prime by slowly cranking by hand? Thanks for the advice.

Thanks, far as I know the carb came apart like that. Might have already been broken.

Check the parts they sell here on YT. I'm pretty sure I saw whole carburetors and they didn't look too bad price-wise.

I noticed the battle scars. Thought the insides would be full of gunked up old fuel but it's surprisingly clean in there. Might just need a good cleaning and reassembly.

Idle tube is an easy fix.... Really small
drill bit and tap. New ones from yt... Or
the other guys. When you change your oil
filter there is a small hole on the back
side in there, squit oil in it until it
runs out.... Pump primed.! Amazon carbs
are inexpensive, under $30, and work
great! Kipa is one brand. We have bought
15+ cubs with no carb ( grandpa took it
off to clean, lost it). We have used a
bunch of Amazon carbs. Highly recommend.
And cheaper than the tube and rebuild kit.

That is a slick looking Cub! I've never been that lucky;-) Way back in the day when I had 5 or 7 Cubs there was a replacement carb needle that was supposed to prevent leaking. It was listed as one that fit Briggs and Stratton engines. Of course I can't find the number now but it's out there on the inter-web somewhere. It worked fine for me. Might do some searching, it should come up. Good Luck with it!

Thanks for the info. I never would have thought an Amazon carb would be available and so cheap. Hopefully I won't need one and mine will still be ok with some cleaning.

A little more tricky: I have a six volt battery coming. If I hook up just the way it it is now, it will be NEGATIVE GROUND. This goes against everything I've heard or read about Cubs. But that's how the six volt battery is installed now. Have you run across this before with six volt system? I know when they convert to 12V they change to negative ground. Thanks for all the info. I'd like to get it running this week. A friend is parking his Farmall M out at the county Fair display and wants me to put the Cub next to his. Hope it all works out.
