IH 434 steering

I have posted this also on the IH forum.

IH 434 has a steering problem in that the steering wheel has a lot of play when changing rotational direction. It needs 3/4 of a complete rotation before the wheels react. The pictures show that the steering shaft rises up almost an inch when this happens. Is there a problem with the shaft itself or is there a problem with a bad bearing somewhere in the column? Looks like a big job to remove the steering box since the loader hyd lines are in the way.
Any thoughts?
TIA

It looks like the worm gear in the steering box is riding up on the other gears, pushing up the shaft rather than moving them. Sorry I am not much help

Parts 17, 18, 19 are used both at the top, and bottom of part 20. The shaft should not move up and down. one or both of the bearings are bad/gone. the worm may also have rough race surfaces. A repair manual will be needed. The components may be available from IH, but they might be able to be matched from a bearing company for far less $. Jim
