Vampire farmers

In my nightly travels up the same 2 lane highway I see they were back planting again when I went by about 11pm Thursday night. Most likely trying to beat the heavy rain we got Friday and today. Plus this looked like a weekend farmer that has a 40 hr job this time as the planter was only about twice as wide as the tractor from what I could see.

Hard to tell what he was planting as I can not see the row layout in the dark field. Dont know why but they use a different hill row system for beans and corn so you can tell what they are planting just by looking at the rows. Assume it was beans because if he is planting corn he is very late. Corn in the area is up high enough you can see the rows in the fields with just the moon as a light source. About 6 to 12 inches tall from what I can tell.

You guys getting anything planted in your area.

Just got back from our farm from spraying weeds and grass in our corn. It is about knee high except where the deer have been biting them. Didn't take any pictures really not that pretty. The planters didn't do such a good job.

Some guys got going about a month ago when we had that warm up for a few days and then about 2 weeks ag o they started planting some. It has just been so cold I think a lot is going to be replanted from rotted seed. I could be wrong. We are just trying to get going and rained again this afternoon.

I wanted to plant a little sweet corn in the garden but something told me to hold off a couple weeks ago when we had the warm spell. It's been cool and wet since so that seed would be rotting if it got planted. If you have the help working around the clock is not so bad. Everybody takes a shift and the equipment only stops for repairs or servicing. I'm a one man show and know trying to be mister tough guy only gets things broke and possibly yourself hurt. I'm good for 8 to 9 hours per day working with older equipment that has to be watched constantly.

I saw one guy planting south of me where it's real sandy. I have a couple small felds that are gravely and may start working those tomorrow if it don't rain too much tonight. We still had snow 2 weeks ago.

Hey DCarp, wonder if you've looked recently? I saw lots of corn all tasseled out around here (midway between Austin and San Antonio) today. PS, Hope you got to Moravia. I wasn't able to make it this year. kelly

I dont normally like seeding after dark but they where calling for rain after midnight so I seeded peas till 11 last night and got finished. Believe it or not but there is still snow in the tree rows around the farm yard. Wont be in a day or two. Trees are just starting to get leaves on them. Still have 1500 acres to seed.

A little corn has been planted here on the lighter land very near Lake Ontario, but around home our soil has just enough clay to stay wet a few days after last weeks rain. Things might finally get going here this week. It just doesnt work planting corn into cold mud.

Here in East-Central Wi, a few guys were scratching the ground when we had that warm spell a short while back. We had snow last Monday. The ground is ice cold yet.
