OEM tachometer cable ripoff

I could use advice.

I'm doing work on my 1997 New Holland 6610S, the Mexican-made version of the 6610, of which there are many.

Here's my problem: CNH wants $256 for the bloody OEM 60 tachometer cable, and I can't seem to locate an aftermarket substitute. The only reasonably priced one's in France & won't ship to U.S. This seems to be capitalism at its finest, because a popular aftermarket normally costs, what, about 49 bucks? I've already been railroaded into dropping $1300 on a rear main wiring harness, after a possum decided that mine was in the way of his building a winter nest (I now have learned about peppermint oil...).

As you can guess, I'm a relative newbie (two machines & only modest experience at repair). But, they've finally pushed my Stubborn Button by this blatant attempt to fleece me a second time.

I could use ideas, if you have some. Is it possible to find or modify another 60 tach cable to do the job?

Is the housing okay? If so and it has regular automotive speedometer square drive ends go to a NAPA or other quality auto parts store and ask for a universal replacement speedometer drive cable. Cuts to length and end crimps on, should do the job.

YEA , everything is going this way . I had to give 120 and change for what looked like two bicycle wheel bearing only they go into a Ross steering box on a flippen garden tractor and i found nothing to match anywhere. Now and yea many years back a tach or speedometer cable plus the ends USE to be at EVERY MAW AND PAW parts store and you could BUY what you needed in the size you needed and the end and make it up at home with the use of either a HAMMER or a bench vise to crimp the ends on . Even well into the 80's you could find what you needed . BUT then along came PROGRESS and the fine new way or electronic's and the need for cables went away. Now one may try looking at some places that deal wit old cars and truck , old truck dealers they just might have what you need on some old dusty shelf.

I can't find anything on Amazon - their search feature does nothing but tick me off. But EBAY has the same cable for $12.99. For less than $100 you can get a new cable and a used gauge cluster
including the tach.

Pictures of the ends would do wonders... to see if one of the two standard cables would work. one has the screw on couplers on both end, one large and one small. the other has the large couple on the drive end, and a pinch clip on the tach end.. that was used for the rowcrop fords.. But then could it be a fiat contraption that is unique to a different panel/gauge?

That cable's for the U.S.-made 6610. Mine's the Mexican-made 6610S, which I think has a 60 tach cable. I'll pull it out,
measure it, and put up a photo. Thanks for taking the time to ponder this, though. :)

Apologies for the delay. One end of the tach cable sits down in a well barely big enough to get my hand down in, and it didn't want to come off. So, it took me a while to outsmart it. I finally tightened a hose clamp around the stuck end, and that gave me enough gripping power to disconnect it. The cable is truly shot, and has a 5-inch section in the middle worn clean through the outer casing.

It's hard to see in the picture, but both ends of the inner cable are square in cross-section. It's 60 long, the smaller end thing you screw down is .75 by my micrometer, and the larger one is 1.0. Unfortunately, I'm not good at guessing what pitch the threads are, or whether they're metric or Imperial.

So, do y'all think I could make up my own cable, or how would you go about handling this?

Excellent suggestion. Suddenly I get many more hits. For example, link below looks very much like mine. NINE BUCKS !

I believe I'll slide on down to AutoZone and see if they can help me.

OK, here's what seems like the best solution so far (see link below) -- a cable repair kit for $6. I can recycle the cable ends, and that way guarantee fit to my machine. Fingers crossed !

OOPS ! That cable repair kit only provides the INNER CABLE, NOT the outer tube it runs through.

Caveat emptor. The descriptions on these products are terrible. You have to pursue the Q&A to find details.
