Came in the mail

The year I was born. I got this at an antique store in Madison Indiana. Complete overhaul kit for an Oliver sixty was $49.50. New carburator for a John Deere B was $19.50.

I remember picking up parts at Tractor Supply in East St Louis Illinois in 1963. It seemed that this store had everything including tires

Many years ago we would hire a local trucker to haul our fat hogs to the National Stockyards in National City, Illinois [East Saint Louis]. If you needed farm gates, fencing materials, salt blocks - you name it - they would stop and pick up your needed items at the store across from the stockyards. I guess that store was open 24 hours a day? I've never been there - thankfully we had local truckers who would make the haul for us and I didn't have to miss any work getting the hogs to market.

I guess the National Stockyards is long gone now.

Back when TSC actually handled tractor parts.

Of course, Dog Food Inc. just doesn't have the same ring to it.

TSC changed with the times and what customers wanted to buy unlike many of their competitors that didn't and went out of business. As a livestock guard dog owner TSC has the best deal on dog food in my area BTW.

My dad would have cattle and hogs trucked to Sioux City and Omaha Stockyards and after washing the trailers the driver would do a back haul from Sutherlunds and it was open 24/7 in Omaha.

Doing the math:

In 1953 you could buy the JD B replacement carb for $19.50.

Average inflation rate since then is about 3.5% so a new one should assuming same conditions should run about $216.70 in today's money.

Go on Ebay and you can buy a new JD B carb for $552.99. That comes in at just under 5% annual increase. Going from the most common tractor (sell a lot) to a collector item (sell a few) - the price doesn't seem that far off.

What would be really interesting is seeing the price for an 8N carb in 1953. You can have a new one shipped to your house today for under $32. I bet that one has beat inflation!

I remember those catalogues. Dad bought a set of dual wheels from them. He had a new tractor in 1960, with those duals on it you sure looked like king of the road in 1960.
