Old Gibson...

I have the opportunity to work on an old Gibson, which my father has owned for 40+ yrs. It will run, roughly. I know I need to fix the carb and fuel system, but anything aside from that I'm lost on. I'm hoping there's a Gibson guru on here that can help me out.

Looks like they made some neat tractors. Does yours look anything like one of these models? Despite my designation as "tractor guru" I m anything but. I d previously associated the name with guitars. Someone here can help and it looks like general tractor-repairing principles should apply. They don t look too exotic. If it actually runs you re 90% there. Post some replies with model and other info and a photo would help. You need to have 5 posts before you can upload a photo. Sounds like an interesting tractor.

I had a Gibson many years ago.I hauled it from a barn about 5 miles away after the owner died.It had a land
plow, snow plow,a harrow, and some cultivators. It had a single cylinder Wisconsin and had tiller steer. While the
tractor was very nice, the implements, the hitch holes, and the steering linkage all had heavy wear,so it had been used
plenty.

Yeah, most of the ones I've come across have been run into the ground after decades of rough use. And they are so sturdy that it took 60 yrs to finally break it. This one has the front blade, a narrow attachment and a plow.

(quoted from post at 21:49:36 10/23/22) It's like the small one in the first pic.
I wish it sounded as sweet as a vintage
Les Paul...

Looks like a fun little tractor. You plan to put it to work? Interesting color choice. From my reading, Gibson the younger, son of the firm's founder, died of a heart attack at age 44. Possibly a casualty of American industry. By that time the company had entered into producing forklifts for the government and their tractor-making efforts suffered. Things mostly fell apart after that, without going into all the details, since I don't remember them anyway. Good luck with the tractor, Gerrit

It runs! A little starter fluid, and it fired on the second pull. Impressive after sitting for about 10 yrs. I'll probably just clean out the carb and tank, then just try to keep it going.

It will likely become a yard tractor,
moving trailers around and whatnot. The
green color was a result of my dad
repainting his old John Deere and having
spare paint. The pink rims and random
highlights are the original faded red
paint.

I don't know a lot of the company history,
but there were only around 60k built in
various forms between 1933 and 1952. So,
this thing is at least 70 yrs old.

Good deal, a running tractor always improves the mood. They look similar to Simplicity and Wheel Horse from those days. Maybe some Economy models, too. Wisconsin engine? Thanks for the update. Gerrit
