What causes clutches to chatter and grab? I would think that if the material hardens and glazes it would
slip easier. I have a Farmall Cub that I will be replacing the clutch. Just wondering why they fail like
that. Also, does the flywheel need to be resurface at a machine shop when replacing a clutch?

Dirt, grease and rust can cause chatter, another is operator error. Clutches are not meant to be slipped,it causes heat. Whenever possible just ease into it and go.

The two worst things for a clutch is riding the pedal so you are working the throw out bearing and slipping the clutch as you take off or maneuvering like bcking into a shed with a wagon or something. We all do it just some more than others.

Several things can cause chatter and grab.

Usually oil is the cause, also a failing pressure plate, damaged disc or pressure plate during installation, poorly rebuilt components, a heat warped flywheel.

On automotive applications, bad motor mounts can contribute.

Chatter on a cub clutch is almost always the 'throw out bearing' which is not a bearing but a graphite puck. If your pressure plate fingers ain't adjusted correctly the puck chatters. Sooner or later the puck will fail. If your clutch is working, then reach though inspection hole and adjust fingers. Also adjust the free play in pedal. I wouldn't worry about the flywheel..... Wife and I have bought 45 cubs over the last few years, most were dead, we got them going and sold most of them to folks who put them back to work! We did keep 4 or 5.....

I have a loader tractor that wants to chatter like that. I've put two new clutches in it and it stops until it gets glazed again. Dan at Clutch Dynamics in Lansing Michigan told me that there's only about thirty five thousandths clearance between the clutch and the surfaces in there and when they get glazed, the clutch bounces off both and that's why they chatter and creep.

Generally speaking, yes, the flywheel should be resurfaced.

Just reinstalled the clutch on my crawler. Flywheel & pressure plate assembly were skimmed & balanced. However, it was impossible to set the clutch fingers accurately because the adjusting bolts were grooved from the fingers. Got it close for now, but new bolts will be needed.

The Flywheel is basically flat like a Car/truck. PP has enough offset in the 6 bolt cover to make it work. Jim

If your Cub clutch chatters when you release and engage it, there is a pretty good chance your release bearing is worn and not flat any more and also there is a chance the release fingers that the release fingers the release bearing pushes against may not all be the same distance from the clutch any more, due to wearing at different rates. It sure helped Daddys Cub to replace the bearing and adjust the fingers so they were the same distance from the flywheel.

In the manual there is a specification for the distance the release fingers are supposed to be from the flywheel. I had to make a special tool-basically a stick of wood with three bolts in it.The outer two bolt heads rest on the flywheel and the middle bolt is used to measure to the release finger.
