Does 2000 blowing oil and smoke from oil filter

I was bush hogging thick grass when my tractor bogged down then a big power surge. All of a sudden oil started leaking from my oil filter and white smoke I think from oil leaking onto my exhaust pipe. I am new to bush hogging any suggestions on what I need to do besides change the oil filter. I m sure I I was cutting too tall of grass for the ford 2000. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Talverson,

I have a 3 cylinder Ford 2000 that I use to bush hog a lot. I've never yet run into any grass/weeds that were too tall or too tough for my little old
Ford tractor. I run in lower gears on tall/tough stuff, but it can always get the job done.

Is your tractor a 4 cylinder? I also have a 4 cylinder Ford 4000. I have no idea what would make an oil filter start leaking.

if you ever run over corn stalks you would understand ,,. some tractor engines have the filter right in harms way,i know of a new 275 mf that ruined the engine from a pin hole caused by a cornstalk while probably turning in a muddy cornfield.dark night old fella just got his new 275 and went out flail chopping stalks ,when he saw the red light on dash, he simply thought it was for his bright lights indicator, the engine seized. Massey dealer pulled some stringsand got him a new engine, and most 275 s have a metal cage for the oil filter ////
as far as 2000 Ford,I would bet the filter was overtight and compromised the o ring,a mighty burst of hotoil pressure can occur ,, Consider yourself lucky you saw white smoke, and hopefullyt had good sense to shut down

Good that you shut it down when you did!

But before changing anything, check the oil level, top up if necessary.

Then start the engine just long enough to get a positive sighting of where
the oil is coming from.

Oil leaks can be scary and deceiving. You want to be sure you do correct the
problem before running again.

There are several things that can cause an oil filter to leak:

A defective filter.

Improper installation, as in leaving an old gasket stuck to the flange, over
tightening, under tightening.

A stuck oil pressure relief valve over pressurizing the system. Rare but it
happens, usually on a cold start up.

Something strikes and damages the filter canister.

What will not damage an oil filter or cause an oil leak is over working the
engine.

Troubleshoot and fix the oil leak, then go from there. There's no way to know what, if anything, is wrong from your description, other than you have an oil leak.

It could be simply a hole poked in the oil filter, or it could be catastrophic.

Could be simply the oil filter backed off from the weeds rubbing on it. Or could be a valve cover gasket leak, or an oil cap came off. Find it and fix it.. Maybe do an oil and filter change, check radiator levels and make sure the radiator is clean and not full of debris or chaff on the front fins.. Then back to work.
