Broken exhaust stud

I have one stud that snapped on me on my 300u disassembly. It is very stuck. I have heated the stud (only) a couple times and it will not come loose. Any tricks to this? I actually have enough other stuff going on that I would not mind farming this out to a shop. Mechanic (auto or tractor), welder, machine shop...? Who is most likely to be able to handle this? I'm a pretty easy going guy with a wrench and do not normally break things. I'm afraid that if it is stuck enough that I snapped it off once then it may just snap again. Right now there is 1-2 inches of stud left outside the hole.

you are in luck if you have that much sticking out , find a nut that will just slide of it and put it on and do a good job welding it. The heat form the welding might help break it loose, just go easy .

Many will tell you to weld a nut on it then put a wrench on the nut and try to turn it out. If it still tight try some more heat.

If possible, I always weld a FLAT WASHER to the protruding Brocken stud...Then a nut to the washer......
Possibly, I've been very lucky..... :)

Bob....

X2 what Bob stated weld washer to stud then weld hex nut to washer

With that much sticking out my method is to FIRST weld a washer,,,,,,, SECOND weld a nut,,,,,,,,,,THIRD let it cool,,,,,,,,,FOURTH use an impact wrench to get the shocking vibrating action (never a hard dead pull may break it off) not set too high torque initially,,,,,,,FIFTH a little at a time try to loosen, then tighten back just a tad, then slowly loosen, slightly re tighten SLOW SO IT DONT OVERHEAT hopefully it will turn out ?? If not grrrrrrrrrr get the drill DRATS

I was going to suggest just what John T said. Don't worry about getting a bead on the outside of the nut. If you do and can't get a wrench on it, grind some off with an angle grinder.

it is a small job for a machine shop if your busy. plus run a tap in after the removal and if they have to drill it out they have all equipment to redrill and tap. most times the job pays for its self time wise. small studs are tricky at times. a big stud u dont need a washer just get in there and welder up.

I'm guilty of not reading all the way to the end of the post. You're right, with one to two inches of stud still sticking out, ya, just slide a larger nut on flush and weld it on, making sure that the stud gets red hot in the process.

With 2 inches sticking out just heat it red then with vice grip or pipe wrench just work it back and forth. If no joy then melt the candle wax in and let cool. No need for anything welded on. IF you could drop it in a pail of water I'd say heat bright red and drop in the water till cool then unscrew.

I don't have any better ideas than what's posted just be gentle. With an inch or so sticking out you've got something to work with.
