We are replacing the supports in the barn that run each side off the center of the barn. The stringers sit on top of these that hold hay mow floor up. The original one's when the barn was built were 4 inch filled with concrete. they rotted out at the bottom where they meet the concrete guessing from manure for the past 50 years. The new ones are 5.5 od, 1/4 thick. I would like to but something around the bottom where they go in concrete to help preventing them from rusting out. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have seen the pipe up as far as 18 from floor level. Naturally the life of the PVC will be short if it is banged by a skid steer or tractor loader during clean out. Places like feed fronts, or in stalls, very little risk of pipe ever getting damaged. I have seen this done with stall dividers , to keep them from rotting off.

Hdpe pipe won't break like pvc. Won't get brittle in the cold and shatter like pvc when it takes a hit. Little more expensive but if it's in an impact area be worth it if you are concerned.

All this talk of sleeves will not prevent the capillary action of moisture and the things carried with that moisture. A galvanized pipe column would be good but not especially cost effective. In the construction trade we quite often paint the columns and steel door frames with an asphaltic material where they contact the concrete floor or foundation. I have used roofing tar, tar based mastic, and even flex seal. The goal is to seal the column surface and prevent moisture from getting in and rust from starting.

> Very left field, research sacrificial anode. Used in marine applications all the time.

At our Florida condo, they are doing repairs to spalling concrete. In order to reduce corrosion to the rebar, which isn't being replaced, they are attaching anodes wherever they're applying fresh concrete. New concrete is highly corrosive, so the anodes will extend the life of the fifty year-old rebar. So I don't think your suggestion is left field at all.
