Loss of pump prime

I removed the hydraulic cylinder from my ih 240 utility tractor and the hydraulic pump has now lost its prime. Is it possible to add some hydraulic oil to the pump by removing the check ball and set set screw to prime the pump or is the best option to pressurize the the reservoir with air?

Probably the easiest would be to put some gentle pressure on the reservoir with the engine running.

Or remove the pressure line from the control valve and pour some oil in. Crank it with the line connected but loose, be ready!!!

Are you referring to the pressure line from the pump to the control valve or from the control valve to the cylinder. I am not sure which line is the pressure line.

Now that I can see it, if pressuring the tank doesn't work, try taking the rubber line loose there by the engine oil filter, hold it up and pour it full of oil with the engine off, let it drain down into the pump..

That should wet the internals of the pump so it will draw up some oil from the tank.

And you could crack that same line loose there at the pump with it running. Just have a rag around it, it will do some serious gushing once it catches prime!

I would try loosening the fitting just a little on the black high pressure hose and see if that will let the air out of the pump.

Is it possible the other hose connection is leaking air into the pump?

I had to rebuilt the pump on Jubilee. One spring inside was broken.

It appears you have a plug on top of pump with an allen wrench.

Back the plug out a little and purge the air out. If not fill the pump with oil at the plug.

Thank you for the advice. I was able to get the pump to prime after removing a plug on the top of the pump and putting in as much fluid as possible. I cycled the starter a few times and then added more fluid. I also loosened the pressure line and cycled the starter . I then started the engine and moved the lever a few times and the hydraulics worked.

Thanks
