'tractor only needs a coil to run' or a battery, or plug wires, or clean carb.....but asking full price for a runner. Then they get mad when you tell them what you will pay for a non running tractor. If it's truly that simple fix it and get full price. I think someone mentioned no title on vehicles, but that ad always says how easy it is to get one, well do it!!

Never absolutely never fall for that trap make the deal and pay BEFORE any work or you will come out looser for sure.

That would be a good thing for a lot of people, some are wound pretty tight.

I haven't had a problem getting a title for a vehicle. It took a little while to get the title for the trailer that I bought at an auction and when it arrived it says Homemade as a manufacturer.

Even better if you can winch it up on your trailer and get it out of there without turning a single wrench, DO IT.

There have been cases where the seller sees how easily you got it running, and will decide that you cheated them and want more money, or will try to back out of the deal.

This happened to a guy I know. Bought a vehicle from his friend. Winched it on his trailer. Then proceeded to stand around BSing with him while he was there. Subject came up about what it would take to get the vehicle running. Buyer told seller that problem isn't what he thought it was. And that it's likely a much simpler problem. After some, I'm right your wrong talk, a bet was made. Buyer got the vehicle running right there on the trailer before he even left with it.
Anyways, seller got mad. Was embarassed that it was so simply fixed. Felt like he was getting screwed over. Wanted more money for it. Turned out to be a bad deal. Caused an end to the friendship for the 2 of them.

I take an (only needs this to run) with a grain of salt. If it's coming from a seller that has become un-able to do things themself, I might give it some consideration if not to much time has went by (not sitting under a tree for 10 years).

Here in Ontario, a vehicle must pass a safety inspection before you can license it in your name to be road legal . And the ad will read this vehicle will easily pass safety inspection . And I always figure, if it will pass a inspection so easily, then go get the inspection done, and I will pay a $100.00 more. A brake job now can run a$1,000.00 at a shop, and new tires are over $100.00 each.

Always check the title number to the actual vehicle number and make sure there are no alterations. It is also best for both parties to get an immediate transfer done. I was with a friend when he purchased a car, he held the title open and later just sold the body to a guy who used it in a restoration. When the guy went to register the car it had been reported stolen. The guy my friend bought the car from had got a duplicate replacement title and reported the car stolen. It turned out that the sellers future/ex father in law had loaned him some money with the car as collateral. It turned out ok, after the my friend and I spoke with the police and agreed to testify the original seller changed his tune.

yes--went to buy a non-running lawn mower once--brought a jump start to figure out what was wrong--owner told me if i got it running the cost goes up!! Had a broken starter shaft--every thing else looked good so i bought it for the lower price

Friends were looking at a pair of John Deere 730 diesels. Widow owner said they had sat for some time, and would need 5 batteries each to start, that was what her husband had done. Price was decent, so one friend took one 730, other guy had to think about it. When they went to get the first one, they pulled it a short distance with the pickup and it started right up. The price went up $500 for the other one.

The one that always got me was the seller would have a vehicle that ran poorly. He would say it only needs a tune-up. When challenged on that, he would say that he was not going to put any more money into it and just wanted to get rid of it.

The REAL story in most cases was that the car needed an expensive repair like a valve job, head gasket, or some other expensive repair. The tune-up excuse was a cover up. Then, the unsuspecting buyer gets stuck with either putting a lot of money into it or taking the loss and walking away.
