Hello Ric welcome to YT! There is a John Deere topic
section specific to that brand. Place this post over
there, more eyes in the know about those green
machines will see it there, see link. However, I will be
the first to say I have no idea what you have there.
Pony starter motors for JD R model diesels came to be
in 1949. There is also a 1939 pony motor for a D2 but it
was built by Caterpillar. Maybe you are talking about a
..hit and miss.. style engine with the name of ..pony..
So red paint is more my wheel house. Otherwise, know
enough about other things to just be dangerous.

Edit: Oops please excuse my incorrect response, apparently I am dangerous. Do not know how I connected your post with John Deere. I am going to be busy for a bit but will come back here later tonight and get you some more information.

Not 100% positive, but a 39 D2 should be
either a 3J or 5J prefix on the serial
number, in the states anyway.
Or are you showing serial number from a
component? On the Cat collectors site you
can get a lot of help.

Just googel ACMO (Antique Cat Machinery Owners) they will let you post as a visitor and ask your
question , you will get an accurate answer there.

Your Cat dealer has many parts for the pony carburetor--it is most likely a Zenith made for Cat
You need a parts book for your D2 that covers your serial number the serial no is on a tag on left rear housing and on the engine block behind the pony clutch controls

Thank you, I got the serial number off the plate and it is stamped in the block it is 10P 4832. This is my problem, cant find anything on the 10P model. I do have the original operators manual and the maintenance manual but neither specify the pony motor parts or make.

Check out YouTube squatch253. He has done a series this past yr of a major
restoration of a D2 and the next one thats due is the carburetors

Caterpillar D2 s/n prefix for 1939 would be 3J or 5J. Can you post a picture of the machine and/or the s/n tag? There should be one tag
on the left side of the engine and another tag on the transmission case under the seat, upper left side looking from the rear. Those
should match if the engine is original.

You don't have enough posts to include pictures yet. Once you get past 5 or 7 posts it unlocks.

That said I can't imagine that there is anything all that different about a "10P" vs a 3J or a 5J.

the Carburetor should have a little triangle tab fastened to the top which will give you the exact model of the carburetor--most important is to clean it thorough--including removing the plugs on the bottom to give you access to the small passage ways in it

Go down to the forum named "Test Forum" and make several posts trying to attach pictures. You show 3 posts on record currently, make 3 or 4 test posts and see if pictures start attaching for you. You might have to log out and log back in if the pictures don't show after 4 tries.

Yes I found another tag both front left and on the back end saying it is a 5J 1628 SP. thank you

Thank you, upon further inspection I found the real serial number, yes it is a 5J1628SP. Thanks again

Glad you found it. The SP on the end means Special. Now what is special about it I likely couldn't tell you. Caterpillar stamped SP if
something was different from the basic build. For example I had a D4 Traxcavator serial 7U prefix that had SP on it. Before Cat bought
Traxcavator they would sell dozers to Traxcavator or to the dealers and they would fit them with the loader. The Traxcavator model had a
longer undercarriage than a standard D4, hence the SP for Special on the Serial tag.

It WAS orig a Zenith TU4C carb. Who knows what's on it now.

Might as well call these guys:

Or you'll be messing with it for decades. Just do a carb swap and get back to the important stuff.

Thank you, I believe the SP is because it has a dozer blade added at time of the order

Thank you docmirror, this dozer only has 1249 hours so I would like to keep it original but I really do appreciate your response and recommendations. I will contact the above link and see what they say
