Picking and Grinin

We finally had enough hard frosts to kill of the last of the soybeans. Finally were able to finish picking today.Oldest son farmed this little part of this farm this year. He planted the beans with a McCormick drill. I got the perimeter of the field laid off for him and turned him loose. Not to have ran a combine before, he did pretty good. I told him whatever was left in his field where he picked was his doings. Lol. I think it made his day.

1660? Take the wiper off. You never combine in the rain anyway. You won't be tempted to wipe the dust off with it and scuff windshield if it ain't there. That's the first thing I do when I get a tractor or combine.

Our oldest son needed to go put a truckload in the bin and his youngest girl, about 9 at the time was riding with him.
Told her to run the combine and if something went wrong, turn it off and jump away from it.
She did fine.

I don't know about the good teacher part...some things I tell him sinks in really fast as other things he just has to learn the hard way. Glad he was able to tend this place this year with what equipment he has. It's been a good learning experience for him. I think he realized that I don't have a money tree hidden somewhere now.

Not sure if it is a local thing there, but I have never heard ..picking.. used in reference to harvesting soybeans with a combine. Here it usually only refers to ..picking.. corn. Soybeans, wheat, oats and sorghum are all ..cut.. I suppose if you would have used another word your title would not have worked out. Great having the next generation take on some responsibility looks like he is definitely concentrating on the task.
